Jazz / JB combo - questions

Hi all, i just joined the forum, and ive tried a search on this topic but im a bit overwhelmed with all that came up.

Im not very technical so please bear with.
Im in the process of assembling my first custom guitar. Its a mahogany body, mahogany neck and an ebony fingerboard.
Ive decided i only want to have a master volume and master tone.

As for pickups after much researching i feel that the Jazz / JB set is the one for me.
(i mainly picked the JB because i liked its clean sound compared to higher output pups such as the invader, while its distorted sound gave me the right amount of "fatness". Combined with the Jazz pick up i really do think its a versatile guitar)

However i have no idea what pots and cap i should use.
I was going to use two 500k pots, but after some reading of the posts here, a 500k pot isnt the way to go with a JB(right?)

So my question is what do you use and why. (bearing in mind im only using one volume and one tone)

I use 500k with my JB's in an American Strat and like it very much.......

I think you have a good combination - hear how it sounds of it before you over think your tone. I have always used 500K pots, I have tried 250K pots just for experimentation and certainly is another aspect of the JB (very warm and smooth - too much for me)

Re: Jazz / JB combo - questions

Welcome aboard.

The JB does have a tendency to have piercing highs, so many like to use a lower value pot to attenuate some of the harsh highs. The perceived "harshness" of the highs is going to depend greatly on the guitar (the woods, construction, hardware, etc) as well as your ears.

I would try 500K first with any humbucker. If the top end is too piercing then I'd look into lower pot values. When I had the set in my Les Paul I started with new 500K pots and ended up going back down to the stock 300K pots, which worked to warm it up and smooth out the harsh highs.

thanks for the replies.

what about the cap? im guess this wont make as much difference compared to a pot.

Also, are any sound clips online where i can here this combo of Jazz and JB?

Re: Jazz / JB combo - questions

I have a Japanese Charvel with a JB/Jazz combo.
It's mahogany as well.

I tried 250 pots in it and hated it. It was too bassy. The guitar was bassy in the first place, but I was bored and wanted to experiment.

On the other hand, I put 250 pots and an old custom JB into a mahogany (very light low grade kind) guitar that is super thin and trebly; the 250K pot worked really well and tamed all the issues with that guitars sound.

So, you won't really know until you bolt all the pieces of your new axe together. The nice thing is that all of these guys here are really useful for helping us tweekers find some more alternate ideas...

Have a great weekend.
Aloha

I don't find the JB bright with a 500k pot even in my superstrat with a floyd and brighter woods than yours. I wouldn't worry about the JB being too bright.

I own this combo in an ESP LTD EC-100QM. I would recommend 500K pots, and if you want more versatility, make them push/pull. I use 500K pots with push/pull and this axe is a fire breather! However, if when you try it out, 500K is too harsh for you (it shouldn't be, since it's the recommended, but for some people it might be), you can go with custom resistance values between 250K and 500K to find what you want. Still, I'd go with 500K because Seymour recommends it.

I got clips on my website. They might be old and/or not as good sounding, but they're there. Some of the songs I had basically heard the day before lol.
