Jazz neck as Esquire pickup?

I am planning on building an Esquire (with humbucker) from Warmoth parts. I have a 2002 MIM tele for normal tele stuff and want something different.

I bought a Jazz neck and a Little 59 for my MIM, them I was contemplating routing a full size humbucker in bridge for a Pearly Gates but then I decided to do a Warmoth build and play with mods on that instead of my MIM, so other than the Little 59, I am going to put it back "stock".

I thought I'd start with the Jazz neck pickup I already have. I could buy another pickup but want to try this first. So here is the question in all of that - Anybody have any magnet recommendations with it in the bridge? I've still got the original magnet in it but I have a 2, 3 and 4 also. I haven't swapped one out before but it looks simple, I could try them all but could get expensive in changing strings (but that's probably the best way to find out what sounds best to me).

I've tried neck humbuckers in the bridge with mixed results. Give it a shot, you might end up sticking an A2 in it to round out the high end somewhat.

Re: Jazz neck as Esquire pickup?

If you like a clear, bright, and low-output bridge humbucker, and you can't seem to get it because you find most bridge models too hot, you will love that pickup there. An A2 magnet in it would make it even better, IMHO. Personally, I find that the best sounding bridge humbuckers to my taste are usually A2 neck winds (e.g. a PGN in the bridge spot = heaven). But I like clarity and low output from the guitar, and using the amp to achieve the various tones from there. If you want a high-output (i.e. compressed) sound, you probably won't like most neck models in the bridge position.

Re: Jazz neck as Esquire pickup?

A2 is my first instinct. I've tried a4 in the bridge but wasn't happy at all with the sound. Much preferred both a2 and uoa5.

I've tried a3 in the neck and it's the clearest but also underpowered. You really have to lay into it to get everything out of it.

Thanks guys, I might end up trying them all but I'll start with an A2 and see how it sounds. Probably have about two weeks before I get there.
