Jazz neck with UOA5?

Hi,

I find my AP2 neck to dark in my PRS CE 22 so I'm thinking of converting it to a Jazz. I have a regular A5 magnet and the UOA5 version ... Thoughts on what to use?

I like the AP2 output and its not just the bass side that's dark, overall it sounds like the pickup is too dark.

The guitar itself is dark because I'm having trouble with the bridge pickup too. I just put an Aldrich in the bridge and removed the C5... It's better but still a little dark.

Thanks

Re: Jazz neck with UOA5?

The Jazz and the 60's Gibson T-Top always seemed like similar (tho not identical) pickups to me: Bright, clearer, less mids, less muddy bass, etc.

I'd order a small Gibson T-Top style A5 magnet from Addiction FX. And a regular A5 and UOA5 too. Try them all.

An UOA5 in an A2PN will be a little brighter, have a little sharper high end. Nothing drastic though.

Depends on how much more treble you want. Alternatives are:
- A3 - bright but rounded high end, full mids
- A4 - even EQ, brighter than an A2
- A5 - a lot of treble and bass, scooped mids

A roughcast version of any of these will smooth out the high end a little.

That was always my take on the Jazz. An idealized T-Top kind of tone.

Thanks for the replies... I only have A5 & A4 so I'll try the regular A5 first

I think you'll like the UOA5 in the neck slot. It shoulder be brighter but still reasonably smooth sounding.

If the A5 is too scooped, go with the A4.

Re: Jazz neck with UOA5?

I had a really dark, mid-heavy guitar with an Alnico II Pro, and an A5 cured the problems I was having. I would never choose to use a Jazz (or a C5 in the bridge), but they just worked really well in this guitar.

If I may, IMO, an A3 APH1N is a thing of beauty, specially in semi-/full-hollow instruments.

More clarity, enhanced note separation and dynamics for days, compared with the stock APH1N.
