Jazz on an 8 string

Re: Jazz on an 8 string

Do you people not realize he’s playing bass and guitar at the same time?

Try it and come back and tell me he sucks. lol.

None of the examples shown are doing that.

Or keep listening to bland music.

Admittedly, I didn't read every post but I don't recall anyone saying he sucks. The music he is playing sucks.
Just like In my original post where I stated that I like shred guitar but can't listen the guys like Yngwie....he's an amazing player but his songs suck.

Music is subjective. There is no good or bad music. Just music you like or don’t like.

Someone’s technique can suck. His doesn’t. And he’s doing something very original.

The more you listen to complex music the more normal is sounds.

To me, this is one of the pinnacles of jazz guitar. But it’s obviously an acquired taste. So is much of Coltrane and Monk. Jazz isn’t always mellow and pretty.

This thread is weird.

The only reason your 8 string would get djenty is because you dial in a crappy tone and play crappy riffs.

Re: Jazz on an 8 string

Getting the thread back on track.... I did a search on YouTube for 8 string jazz guitar and found several good vids. So it can be done.

Re: Jazz on an 8 string

George Van Eps used a 7 string in the 30s (7th string tuned to A) to play bass lines, chords and melodies at once. Not many have surpassed what he was able to do with it, playing in that style.

You just don't get complex music (jazz) that's all.

If you listen to and incorporate jazz in your playing, you'll be able to expand and enrich your vocabulary beyond typical two-fingered chord/ blues-based pentatonic.

As for Yngwie, who the f**k cares?

What can I say? I picked up the guitar because I wanted to play ballsy rock, not elevator music.

Re: Jazz on an 8 string

I listened to an hour of Monk today. He can be kind of stark and austere.

Re: Jazz on an 8 string

Oh cool. Yeah I know what you mean. You just have to be in art music mode. His tunes and playing are pretty melodic and harmonically colorful even if he goes out there a bit at times.

He'll keep playing the melody repetitively and strike the keys hard. And string his lil Monk riffs together instead of playing linearly.
