Re: Jazz or '59 neck?

+1. That's the biggest downside to '59N's. Fix that, and you'll have a lot more happy players. I've got to try an A4 in one of mine.

Of all people, you haven't tried an A4 59n? Hard to believe, Rick. Give it a go. I've been through A5, A2, and A4 in mine in my Les Paul, and the A4 is sticking. A2 is great, arguably better than A5, but A4 really can't be beat.

Re: Jazz or '59 neck?

Between the two I prefer the Jazz (N). The 59(N) is a little too boomy for me. But the 59 is a great pickup for neck humbucking solos.

Not tried a 59, but love the jazz in my ibanez S. In comparison to the stock inf pick ups i found far too muddy and boomy in neck. Swapped it for a jazz and its now clean and bright. still holds a decent amount of low end but i use c standard tuning, sounds even better with a touch of chorus.

I Like a stock Seth in the neck better than anything about the 59...I forgot that I actually have Seths in my LP and not the 59s..

I actually use my Jazz neck in the bridge of my Strats. They make a lovely articulated crunch.

I wish the bassiness of '59N's could be changed a little, maybe if they were wound slightly different. It's the biggest complaint about that PU.

Re: Jazz or '59 neck?

'59 or jaz in the neck of what? what i would put in one guitar i wouldnt put in the other. and your rig and style blah blah blah, all play a factor

I second this. I have a Jazz in a couple of guitars and it sounds GREAT! If you are looking for more sparkly cleans, this is a great option. (plus sounds great dirty) If you want a dirtier bluesier/creamier clean tone go with a 59 or as I like to run, 59b models in the neck.. great bluesy tone.

Rick, just put an A3 in and you won't be able to get it to mud out, not even on purpose. Same story with the Jazz.

HTH,

Re: Jazz or '59 neck?

For me, it depends on the guitar. I tend towards '59 but if the guitar has inherent bassiness, Jazz is my choice.

Re: Jazz or '59 neck?

How does it compare to an A4 '59N, which you're a big proponent of. Which do you prefer?

Depends on the task ahead.

The A4 is crisp but sweet, matching perfectly a strong, singing A8 in the bridge, making it the best all-'rounder mag set.

You can play any kind of music with it, even the heaviest styles, if you have enough gain on tap.

But when vintage is the key word, the A3neck/UOA5bridge is hard to beat in PAFish sets, like the '59set, and I LOVE it with an Ant set.

It's THE mag combo in semi-hollows. Hint! Hint! ;)

The Jazz set sounds best with A2 mags, it should be sold stock with A2s, if you ask me.

Add this to the "new" hybrid concept becoming more mainstream, thanks to Bach2Rock, and the "sky's the limit" phrase never got more sense than now.

So many new tones to be discovered, so little time... ;)
