Jazz or Full Shred

Hi all,

My current pickups setups is a TB6 (Duncan Distortion) bridge and SH1 (59 Model) neck.

My guitar is made by mahogany body and neck and a Brazilian exotic wood on top.

I'm planning in replace the 59 and I'm looking for a pickup with better harmonics and high end.

It must be a good pair for my Duncan Distortion.

I'm currently playing songs like Yes, Rush, Dream Theater and fusion stuff.

Nowadays I'm in doubt about Jazz and Full Shred.

Anyone of you has a good suggestion?

Thanks!

Ivo

Re: Jazz or Full Shred

I use JazzN's in a couple mahogany guitars & think they're one of the best neck HB's out there. If you want clarity & definition, a Jazz is hard to beat. Not boomy, no mud.

Re: Jazz or Full Shred

+1 on the Jazz N; it has a sultry, Stratty feel for a hummer, and no boom. Got it myself in mahogany, love it (although sometimes I want a more vintage tone in the neck). It's half of the holy JB/Jazz set, and since the Distortion is a JB with a ceramic magnet, I'd imagine they would go very well together.

The Full Shred pair would be another fine choice. There was a discussion about them a little bit back, and we came to the consensus that they sound really good with a great amp, but really lousy with a bad one. They're exquisitely sensitive, and reveal everything about your playing and your rig. Alas, I've failed my saving throw, and have to mention Opeth's album D4mn4tion (stupid family-friendly text filter) again...

Re: Jazz or Full Shred

Jazz is also what SD recommends.

But then again SD named the pickup "Jazz."
How anyone ( let alone Seymour ) could name this pup "Jazz", when it sounds nothing like a Jazz pickup, I'll never know.

The Jazz is my least favourite pup but it will get you a Yes / Rush tone and is a little bit brighter and better mid balanced than your 59 however it won't capture any more harmonics as it also uses A5 magnets.

For the music you play I personally would lean towards ceramic mags, so a Distortion neck would have to be a strong contender.
To get an idea of the sound, I'd swap out your bridge pickup to the neck position.

Re: Jazz or Full Shred

A screaming Demon Sh-10 might be what you're looking for. It does pretty well in the neck position.

Re: Jazz or Full Shred

Hi all,

Sorry for my delay in replay all your posts.
My wife doesn't allowed me to be on line during christmas hollidays.

Rowan suggested the Screaming Demon on neck position.

Before wrote the original post I heard all SD pickups sounds available on the website, and I really enjoy SD sound.

But I'm not suppose to have volume problems using this pickup on neck position.

What are your feelings about it?
If it really works well, it is my choice.

Thanks,

Ivo

Re: Jazz or Full Shred

Full Shred is similar to jazz but better suited to high gain tones. IMO the jazz sounds like bumbum under a lot of distortion. The Full Shred on the other hand just sings, it's a real pleasure.

+1

I don't know what bumbum sounds like...but the improvement of the Full Shred neck over the Jazz neck for high gain fluid solos is ASTONISHING !

Re: Jazz or Full Shred

Hmmm...I had both the Jazz and the Full Shred neck in identical guitars for a few months. They sound so similar that I think many would have a hard time telling them apart in a listening test.

I heard only minor differences such as the Jazz being a little sweeter/rounder and the Full Shred has just a tiny bit less low end.

Re: Jazz or Full Shred

I have the jazz in my neck of my soloist, and it's coil tapped. I go back and forth on liking it. It goes from a good neck pickup that gets the job done (in a mundane way) to being really awesome. It depends on what you'rre playing. But the jazz will let you hear EVERY note you're playing. I'd say go for it if you're not looking for that standard 59 sound which is pretty played out.
