Jazz SH2N Wire Code Help

This sounds silly, I am embarrassed just posting, but I am trying to figure out why there are technically 5 wires in a 4-wire pickup code.

Black
Green
White
Red
Bare, twisted

I want to use it as a straight humbucking (no coil tap) in the neck position. It is the bare wire that I don't see in the color code configuration, so do I;

twist it (bare wire) with the green wire and use it as ground?
Twist red & white, and tape?
Black is hot?

Yes to all of that. There are 2 wire ends (start and finish) coming off of each coil, and then a separate ground wire that's soldered to the baseplate and (sometimes) copper shielding around the coils.

you have it right, the bare always goes to ground regardless of what you do with the other wires
