Jazzmaster Bridge Help

I just bought a Jazzmaster and want to get rid of the buzz. I know that replacing the bridge with a Mustang bridge will help, but would just changing out the saddles to Mustang or Graph-Tech saddles work too? When you replace the entire bridge, you have to wrap the bridge posts with electrical tape to get it to stay in and I really want everything to fit as it should without ghetto-rigging it. I'd really appreciate any help here. Thanks.

Re: Jazzmaster Bridge Help

Replacing the saddles with Mustang saddles will only make it so that the strings won't jump around. To get rid of the buzz a lot of people wrap tape around the legs of the bridge, but I used heat-shrink tubing instead and that seems to work best (for me atleast) and has a cleaner look and feel to it.

Re: Jazzmaster Bridge Help

alright. I'll set a few things straight :smokin: But before that, Rizzla and Barney, we NEED pics of those Jazzies :D good to have 2 other JM fans on board ;)

First of all... where is the buzzing coming from? From the strings sympathetically vibrating behind the bridge, or the saddles? Second of all... sorry, but NO TAPE!!! This really shouldn't make a difference in buzzing, unless your bridgeposts are seriously loose, which I've never even seen but apparently does happen...

the tape is put there by some people to stop the rocking motion of the bridge, but that rocking is actually necessary (if you use the trem). Even if you don't, the tape is pretty redundant, as when set up properly the bridge should stay in place anyway.

Don't replace with a Mustang bridge (though that would help somewhat); here's what to do.

Set the bridge as close to the body as possible... 2mm should be about right on most guitars.

Set the saddles higher rather than the bridge posts to accomodate string height... this "locks" them in place and prevents them from rattling (they're usually what rattle).

Also... use higher guage strings to make the whole mess more solid. I suggest 11s. Make sure the bridge is centered when you do intonation.

If you have probs with the strings not staying in the slots, just file em down :smokin: you don't need a mustang bridge.

and last of all... NO TAPE!!!! :D

HAH!!!

I do. but it needs a neck ;) I'll post pics later :D but my camera's dead :(

And a Jaguar is the same setup ;)

Re: Jazzmaster Bridge Help

Agreed, .11's are as low as you should go on a Jazzmaster and especially a Jaguar. I'd actually use .12's on my Jazz, but it seems like Pyramids don't come in that guage.
