Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

I know that the claw makes a difference in the tone, but personally I think that's a negligible difference... The 1 meg pots however definitely make the difference, and make up for the shorter scale of the guitar imo by brightening it up.

Yep, but try the 250K's you will notice the Strat tone. Like you said, same pups as a Strat but with a claw.

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

I'm genuinely really interested in your bridge setup, as I don't quite understand how it keeps the bridge centered while allowing it to move...

Take your bridge to the local hardware store and try to find those brass ferrules (Plumbing supply) that fit a little bit loose - not tight, about a c**t hair clearance.

Then, file them down one each side so that the bridge rest at the proper height. Do not file all on one side. SInce the ferrules are tapered on the outside and smooth on the inside, it's an automatic centering device.

Plus side, brass add to the sustain.

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

ok, I THINK I see what you mean, I'd be interested to see that in practice... Seems like it would get caught up a lot.

If I ever can't get one to set up correctly, maybe I'll try that, but for now stock seems to work fine :D

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

HAH... I have only porn quality pics at the moment, maybe tommorow I'll get to disassembling to show how that's done...

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

Wow, great thread Dangles.

Honest request, can you post pics to show what you're talking about? Like post pics of the guitars and their functions/parts/etc.? Obviously only if you have time. But you're very knowledgeable obviously.

Again, congrats dude! Definitely vault-worthy.

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

...k! :D

Overview. Lol, though somehow I think words explained much of this better :laugh2: The jag scheme is def. more intuitive than the stang...

shoddy **** things, these pics.

but hey.

...but the stang becomes infinitely easier when you reallize that any pickup is off when the switch is in the middle, on when shoved either way, in phase when in the same direction, and out of phase when opposed.

anyway, here are bridges. Note cover on Stang, to inspire hate.

(also note I've yet to cut down the intonation screws as I recommended, but I don't need to with the way I have my string spacing yes I do need to do this however :laugh2:)

...was just reminded of another thing to remember about the Mustang trem, the arm, don't put it in so far that it pokes through the hole and touches the trem plate, this will mar the trem plate and limit your range... If you look at the pic above, you can't see the trem arm behind the tailpiece. this is how it should be ;)

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

My japan jag still seems to buzz a bit (both the trem and bridge) it has a brand new mustang bridge and the stock (as far as I know i got it secondhand so not 100% sure) tremolo and both seem to make some amount of noise and while it isn't picked up by the pickups I worry that it may be affecting tone.

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

the trem buzzes? If the arm is in, it could be rattling a bit in the socket, the solution to this is to pinch the tabs on the bushing, or you can bend the arm SLIGHTLY to stop this... USAV trems won't have any rattle though because of the bushing design. Actually make sure all the screws on the unit are tight. On jap ones the nut that holds the bushing on is sometimes loose... (in case you can't tell, I REALLY like the USAV trem a whole lot better)

I don't know where buzz would be coming from on a Mustang bridge... Unless you've got a crappy replacement one with a loose pole. Take the bridge off and make sure it seems solid. The Mustang bridge should feel completely solid.

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

Yeh its mainly the trem which I'm looking at replacing with a USAV trem anyway. It was the same buzzing that was on the original bridge on it when I got it (an older mustang bridge) so maybe its just caused by the trem and I'm thinking its the bridge.

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

Just took bridge out seems solid and fine. It is an allparts bridge but seems secure. Only buzzing when played and on certain string ( i think g being the main one). Seems to be saddles more then bridge itself maybe the actual grooves are casuing the problem?

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

...idea.

Could be that the string is vibrating behind the saddle against the back of the bridge :D

Another reason I forgot to mention for keeping the saddles up high on a Jag bridge for a jag... On my Mustang there's barely any clearance back there, and there's probably less for a Mustang bridge on a Jag.

Examine this pic of a Jag with a Mustang bridge... they're nearly touching, or might be

Can you lower the bridge?

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

Yeh that could be it as the higher I have the bridge the worse it is. Problem is I still get a little fret buzz with it at the height I have it so it definately can't go lower but I think I need to have the frets dressed I may take it into a guitar tech to get the neck done as it isn't in the best shape (although looking at the body its pretty good by comparison). At least now I know the problem so that if I can eliminate the fret buzz I can lower the bridge in turn getting rid of bridge buzz and may get a new trem to and my Jag will be perfect (well as perfect as a jag can be)

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

...yeah, get the neck sorted... If you still have the problem, switch back to a jag bridge (examine how much space there is on mine above)

Re: Jazzmaster/Jag/Stang/JagStang tutorial!!!

I am a friend of Stratman, who asked if I would post these on his computer.

He is too cheap to buy his own digital camera, only because he owns a bunch of old school Canon 35mm stuff.

Anyway - here are some pictures I took for him.

...alright! It's hard to figure out exactly how the brass things factor in in those pics... graphtechs though, sorta cool :smokin: The bridge overall on that Jag is much higher than mine though, as those pics show...

Another diff I noticed between CIJ and AV bodies in the meantime... the angle of the contours on the CIJ are in fact very different, it's more "upright" on AVs, and the fact that I notice this on my jap jag now all day long sorta annoys me :smack:

anyway, I'm not begging for this to be vaulted right away but...

IGNORE ME!!!
