Jazzmaster pickup question

i am customizing a wor moth jazzmaster and have no idea when it comes to pickups. I know I want either the vintage for jazzmaster sjM-1 or the hot for jazzmaster
sim-2. My question is, can I have both of these one at the neck and one at the bridge or would this not workout so well? I know they have different output levels So this is why I'm wondering. Also if both would workout, which should I have at the bridge and which at the neck. I'm building this guitar for surf so if both is a no go, which would you recommend for surf? I have listened to them both but would of course love some input from the people that know what they're talking about. Thank you!

The hot is likely to lead you away from surf into most probably alt rock territory. The vintage will be a very close repro of what was in the 60's JM's which probably is where you are sitting yourself stylistically.

I would have to agree, I took another listen and the hots don't seem to have the twang. Would installing a battery box be a good move regardless as to weather these are passive or active? I case I ever wanted to change things.

Well, any battery box implies some form of boost or other. I've never used an onboard boost myself as I can have a pedal for that. I'd personally never go active pickups again as its just not my style, I am much more on the vintage side of things.

I think we're on the same page. Now just to be clear, the sjm-1s are passive correct haha?

i have an antiquity II set in a jazzmaster. very good for surf tones.

For surf, you're probably NOT going to want the hots. Vintage model is great, and the Antiquities will be great for surf too. You won't need a battery box unless you plan on doing some unusual wiring for a Jazzmaster.
