I sorta kinda like my new JB, but it sounds a little too round, dark, bottom-mid heavy to my ear. What would be a good, splittable, f-spaced alternative that's a tad brighter and lighter than the JB?

Back it away from the strings a little bit, proper height adjustment of the pickup is crucial. When it is still too dark for your taste, check your pots. When the values read something around 250 kOhm or 333 kOhm you can use a 500 kOhm pot to brighten your guitar up.
I also find the JB round, dark and bottom-mid heavy... but still balanced, and that's why I like it.
Just use an overdrive to tighten basses when things gets to muddy.

My repairman ordered this JB directly from Duncan and it came in a JB box, so I assume it's a JB. It's in a Zion Classic Maple; basswood body (I'm pretty sure), quilted maple top, ebony fingerboard, HSS configuration.
I want to settle on a humbucker before I shop the singles.
I play through a Shaw Tone Rod 40 head and seperate cab loaded with a 1x12 WGS Blackhawk. See www.shawaudio.com
HHHHUUUUMMM.....Raise your screws some...and keep the treble side close to the strings and the bass side lower....That should help a lot....you can also back the whole pickup further away from the strings...that should help also....sometimes, it's the little things
