JB and 59 in a Les Paul magnet swap

Re: JB and 59 in a Les Paul magnet swap

Ordered an A4 and A2.

Ill give the JB2 at try. The JB5 is feeling better once i lowered it down about 1.5 turns and raised the poles a half turn each. Much more open and much less wah in the sound. Less perceived mids though.

I think if you dig the JB's inherent sound, the JB2 is a neat alternative, but it isn't as drastic as magnet swaps in a Custom.

If you like the A2, I don't know why you wouldn't like the UOA5.

Well they sound different for sure!

My JB2 sounds good with scooped mids, like 7/5/7 on my Jet City JCA2212. Might want to try UOA5 to tame the mids a bit.

The 59'4 is very dull in a way. Its strange. The tone knob seems to only effect the sound slightly, not drastically like it did before. It always sounds like the highs are cut out, at 10 its like "The Ocean" by Led Zeppelin kind of sound. Sparkly ehen clean, but dull under gain. Its loud too, doesn't balence with the JB2 as well. Bass is still quite abundant. Im thinking i may need to swap it for an A3 to get some more sparkle and clarity under gain.

Both are getting better the longer the magnets have to break in and charge the conductive parts of the pickup.

I don't know why people keep saying that the JB doesn't work with a Les Paul. This combo has been used for some of the best guitar tones in rock. Billy Duffy, Vivian Campbell, etc... I've had great experiences with the JB and JB2 in Les Pauls. I can understand if you don't care for it, but to make blanket statements about a pickup is kind of silly.

Tried another combo

A2 neck, UOA5 bridge. 59'A2 is pleasantly warm, yet bright enough. JBUOA5 is a tad more open when cranked down to match the 59'A2.

Edit: im actually using an A3, UOA5 combo. Sounds more like a les paul than a shredstick now.
