JB Bridge low volume?

I have a tele partcaster with a SH-4 JB bridge pickup. With volume & tone pots on 10, the guitar is not very loud. If I plug another one of my guitars into the same amp the volume gets loud. The JB is a high output pickup so it should be loud. What should I check to see why the volume is not that high when using the JB?

Re: JB Bridge low volume?

Check to make sure it's wired correctly (and not in single coil or parallel mode or something like that). Also check the volume pot, tone pot, and capacitor wiring. Something may be shorting some output to ground.

Then I would say the problem lies in the guitar wiring. Double check everything. Are the pickups close enough to the strings? That would cause a volume drop, but probably not a super huge drop. But I would check the wiring (switches, pots, output jack, etc.). Is the guitar noisier that you would expect? There may be a grounding issue.

Re: JB Bridge low volume?

I plugged an instrument cable into the guitar with normal output and measured with the multimeter. The output was the same as the potentiometer output.

Then I measure the same way on the guitar with the low volume and there was almost no output. I probably have a bad switch or bad wiring. I will have to try to figure out how to diagnose where the problem is.

Re: JB Bridge low volume?

The chances are that some simple wiring error has been made. Detecting the error requires close visual inspection of the guitar wiring. If you can post decent quality photographs of your guitar's control cavity, it might be possible to remotely diagnose circuitry problems.

Re: JB Bridge low volume?

The good news is that there is probably nothing wrong with your guitar, other than simple wiring error. Get into it, take a bunch of pics and post them, and if we can see, we can try to sort it out for you.

Here are some photos. I appreciate your help.

Re: JB Bridge low volume?

The only thing that can't be seen is the output jack. I wired one backwards once and ended up rewiring and trying different potentiometers before realizing I had my ground and hot backwards on the jack. It made both pickups sound odd and tiny'ish I hope it's something that simple and easy. You may also want to tape the red and white bares coming from the neck humbucker.

Re: JB Bridge low volume?

You should certainly tape off the red & white wires, since it is really easy for them to ground out, taking out one coil.

Re: JB Bridge low volume?

I ended up taking the guitar to my tech. This is what he said: Hey Dan, found the problems! You had several cold solder joints. The output ground was almost void. Also some non insulated wires! Bad for business.

Thanks all for your help.
