JB/Custom hybrid

Has anyone combined these two tonal titans? :D

Anyone have a suggestion as to which coil would be better on the bridge side? If I decide to do this, I'll probably use the Custom's coil (as it is logoed).

As for the coils...most people usally use one coil from a more vintage wound pickup and one from a hotter one...like the 59/Custom, they use the slug coil as the hotter one...A JB is wound a tad hotter that a Custom so I would say use the JB slug coil and the Custom screw coil...BTW the biggest reason that they do this is so that when they split it the slug coil is closer to being like a strat pickup (did all that make sense??). You should know that the farther away from each other 2 coils get in DC resistance the more noise you will get...just so you know! Good luck, let me know how it turns out...I have not done the hybrid thing yet and more that likely I never will but if that sounds amazing I might have to try it!!!

Re: JB/Custom hybrid

Thanks for the info. So, if I understand correctly, the biggest reason for the hybrid is to get a split Strat tone? Perhaps I won't waste my time, then :)

Actually the reason for the Hybrid,is the way the pickup responds with mis-matched coils...You still get nice note articulation but you also get the ballsy tone from the hotter side of the pickup...If you use either the 59/Custom or PG/Custom,you get a nice pickup rated for about 11.3k...I use 2 Hybrids that I made...1 is in a strat and the other is in my Tokai Love Rock. Both are in the bridge position....

Well no...the biggest for haveing the slug coil hotter is to have a split strat tone. The biggest reason for doing a Hybrid is that people claim that Eddie Van Halen did it and they want the EVH tone...I have never found proff that he did that...but some people do swear by them!!!

Bachtorock spoke with EVH and it was EVH that spoke about mixing bobbins...The example was mixing tweeters and woofers together and that's what the Hybrid does....A mixture of weaker and brighter with darker and stronger...

Hmmm... are the Custom & JB too close in power & tonality to really be worth combining?

The actual Hybrid mod was supposed to be using the 59/Custom or the PG/Custom and those are the 2 I've tryed...Not sure about using the JB? I'm not a JB fan? I Know someone or some forum folks have done other Hybrids, maybe they'll chime in?

Re: JB/Custom hybrid

There are a few Dimarzios that do this as well if memory serves me correctly. Fred is one also I believe the Bluesbucker, Megadrive and Steve's Special as well. I think those are it but I'm not positive.

Re: JB/Custom hybrid

Dimarzio Multibucker. isn't that like a Chopper and a Cruiser in a humbucker format?

Re: JB/Custom hybrid

Umm the Multibucker can pick a combination of ANY two of their rail pickups although I'm not sure what the two default pickups are.

Re: JB/Custom hybrid

KorinaStratKyle used to swear by a JB/500t (or 498, not sure) hybrid.

A JB with more balls...I think I'd love that even more than the Invader in my Jackson!

Re: JB/Custom hybrid

A CC coil has 7972 turns, a JB coil has 7267 turns which is a 705 turn difference. Burstbuckers are offset a thousand ohms so that's a 1417 turn offset. As far as humbucking were clear.

There is a guy that ussually posts in the tips and clip room that has build many hybrid pickups. Search for "Rid". He posts a lot of clips and they surely have a distintive tone, it is like warm and articulated.

BTW, What about a 59/JB hybrid?

The reason for doing the hybrids is that mismatched coils will allow frequencies through that matched coils normally cancel out.

This winding count may be correct, but there is another HUGE factor involved... the Custom coil is 43 guage and the JB uses 44 guage...

Where on GOD's grey earth did you get these numbers???

TRUE TRUE... though this is not the ONLY reason!
A humbucking pickup does not ONLY eliminate HUM... it also cancels out many frequencies including the very musical upper harmonics.
Mis-matched coils allow for more of the extreme low and high frequencies to avoid being suppressed.
Also, each coil will have a different RESONANT PEAK which when combined yield a FLATTER frequency response and more NATURAL tone...
DiMarzio patented the mixing of 2 different coils in a pickup like this many years ago...
Interestingly enough, I aquired a prototype pickup made for Joe Satriani and it has a sticker on the bottom that says "Satch 2 Woof/Tweet" and it is almost identical to the 59/Custom Hybrid!
