JB duncan with 500k?

Re: JB duncan with 500k?

I have an HSS Warmoth. I use a 500k for volume, and one of the tone pots is a 500k for the bridge, which is a 59/Custom Hybrid. It isn't quite as hot and compressed as a JB, but it sounds great in that guitar.

I agree with Dave , it's Exactly why I dont care for them on many guitars . Hopkinwfg ~ maybe U will keep learning stuff , which is Good

My G&L ASAT Deluxe has the '59N/JB combo. Bolt-on maple neck, RW board, maple cap over mahogany body, and the Dual Fulcrum Vibrato. It has the 250k pots. I use Mesa amps.

Great sounding guitar. The bridge tone is nicely thick and rounded, perfect for the classic rock and blues I do. A coil split switch adds versatility.

Re: JB duncan with 500k?

And so i have found an old 26 years of used duncan JB... i wonder will it still work as before and have a better than the production JB tone we are now left with ?

Its a bad idea on getting an old pup especially of 20++ year old duncan?

Re: JB duncan with 500k?

Didnt wanna start a new thread....but would like to know how wise would it be to getta old duncan pickup? I found one used and it has a label (TB4 J) and was said to be wound by MJ when she was 20 or 15 years younger lol should be as hot as a JB haha
..

With all the good to hear that acquiring the older JB has better tone qualities and am very interested to find out... but what do you guys think if it be a wise purchase off at 85usd ? Will i be getting noiser PU due to the years of degraded potted wax ? Or i be better off going with custom shop ?

$60 would be a better price if it "is said to be wound by MJ". If it has her code on the label, then maybe $70.

Any sign stated on pickup being wound by her ? I heard that white label stating as TB4 J <=== MJ wound ? Or JB J <==== MJ wound ?

Re: JB duncan with 500k?

"J" is the winder's initial and "J" = Maricella Juarez, aka: MJ

Whether you find a "TB4J", an "SH12J", an "APH1BJ", a "JBJ" or just a good ol' "BJ", they were all wound by MJ :)

Re: JB duncan with 500k?

I'm using a 1 meg with my jb at the moment. It all depends on the guitar, when I had it in my strat with a 500k it was almost too bright then when I moved it to a different guitar it was too dark so now I'm using a 1 meg and it sounds good.

Yes, the wood. I am very tempted to put a 1 meg in my latest build that I referred to earlier. That swamp ash I used is extremely dark...even with the 500 k pots my JB sounds dark. I usually keep my toggle set to parallel to give it a brighter more airy tone.

Re: JB duncan with 500k?

I have the JB in a few guitars -mostly Northern Ash, but also a Koa and an Alder body, all with maple necks and Ebony fingerboards. Not Ice-picky at all in any, but my least favorite application so far has been Alder. Not shrill, but not nearly as balanced-sounding, and thus not as cool as the others. It sounds a little smoother in the Koa guitar, but the Ash ones sound like they want to kill everybody (in a good way).

Re: JB duncan with 500k?

I use my JB with 500 k pots. I don't find it shrill. In fact a little more treble would have been better

Re: JB duncan with 500k?

I run my JB with a single 500K volume pot. No tone. High-middy? Yes. In a cool, grindy, bite-y kinda way. Trebly? No. Not really.

JMO.

The one thing I want to do is try a alnico 2 magnet in the JB
