Would a JB be too bright in an old kramer? Yeah I know they came in Barettas.. i just like to have chunk..

Re: JB In Kramer

Depends on the model/wood. If it's a maple Baretta then yeah, it'll be bright. Whatcha got?

Re: JB In Kramer

I got a jb in mine, i think it´s supposed to be alder body, sounds great to my ears anyway. :)
I used to have a custom in it, sounded "chunkier" imo, but i prefer the lead tones of the jb.

Re: JB In Kramer

It'd probably sound great! Scott Miller was demoing new Seymour Duncan Products through a blackface Super Reverb at NAMM last week and had a JB in his Strat. Sounded killer! And from about 10' or so away I heard none of the "to bright" upper mids that get mentioned so much here on the forum...just a great tone. I'm really starting to think that's a "standing to close to your amp at home" kinda thing. The JB is a great pickup. Lew

Re: JB In Kramer

It'll sound good (assuming alder), but it can be a bit thin on the high notes and a bit loose in the lows. That's the inspiration behind me putting a Custom in the bridge of a mahogany super strat.

Personally, I'd lean towards the Custom, but a lot of music was made in the 80s with alder guitars loaded with JBs.

So Lew...are all the JB Haters here just using too short of a cable! How many hours/$ have been lost to a not long enough cord!!!!!! Are they bedroom shredders who just have the earboe too close maybe?

Re: JB In Kramer

And I thoughtI had you talked into the X2N-which is too much everything!!!!!!

Re: JB In Kramer

Play the JB in a band....never failed me there.
I never get hung up in what others think about gear, no same thing works for everyone, I am quite certain that alot would hate playing through much of the stuff I normally use.
;)

Re: JB In Kramer

I've tried both the JB and the Custom in my baretta, but I've had the Custom in mine for almost 20 years. IMO both are excellent, but it's all about the mids. To my ears, the custom seemed to compliment that guitar a bit better. Seems to like a wide variety of amps as well, particularly my 73 Marshall 100w. Can't beat that chunk and it really sings. Just really well balanced overall.

Re: JB In Kramer

I had an old Krammer Striker ST100, their bottom line guitar, back in the day.

I put a JB in it and it was totally awesome, I fell in love with the tone and the guitar again. I also became hook for like on seymour Duncans :headbang:

I dunno...but I do know that the JB sometimes sounds a little to penetrating to my ears when I listen to it at close quarters or at home all by myself...but that it sounds great when I can get a little distance between my ears and the speakers or when I hear it as a listener from further away than the length of most guitar cords. I think testing a pickup at close quarters at home playing all by your lonesome in your bedroom or basement is not a fair way to judge the tone of anything and I suspect alot of the pickup reviews we read here are done under just such circumstances. I've even written a few myself! Lew

Re: JB In Kramer

You're right on, Lew. I agree 100%. But at the same time, as an owner of a Kramer (maple bodied too), the JB is ice-pick in the ears no matter what. If the body was alder it would be a different story. It's fine in alder and that seems to be where it is at home. In maple though it gets way out of control.

Every solid body maple guitar I've ever played has sounded to hard and bright to me...regardless of what pickups were in there. I hate 'em! :laugh2: So your reply in post #2 was probably right on.

I didn't care about the body wood when I got it, other than it being solid and not plywood. It's a Kramer with a cool graphic on it and I wanted it. :D The Custom Custom suits it perfectly. Whenever I play it through the Marshall it's EVH city. :D

There ya go...buttery pickup in a hard heavy bright guitar. Sounds like a good combo! BTW, just so's you know, you're one of the guys whos opinions I respect and tend to agree with on this board. :) Lew

Thank you. Same sentiments here. :)

Re: JB In Kramer

Cool! Thanks Ya'll! Im pretty sure its alder. Focus 1000. Slant bucker slot, Floyd.

I have another one (JK1000 purpleburst) that based on the weight may be maple and I put a BBQ in that one and it SMOKES!! Got a custom coming for my Focus 6000 that Ill make a C8. Just gotta get my 1000 hooked up. I dont have a JB in my harum and know the old rettas had JBs so thought maybe it was time..

Re: JB In Kramer

The JB will smoke in the 1000. Perfect for it. From what I've heard, the BBQ is a buttery pickup like the CC and if that is the case, I can understand it sounding good in the JK1000.
