I think the mids just stack goofy with the JB and the mahogany. It not necessarily that its bright its just the upper mids on it plus the mids in mahogany just make something funky sounding to me and many other people.

It definitely has a unique sound in an LP style guitar. I actually kind of like it, and the JB has a great overall tone and probably one of the best lead tones of any pick up I've tried. For my main axe, the uniqueness just made it sound kind of weird with a lot of stuff I like to play. Still, I make stick it in another LP type guitar in the future. To go against the grain, I actually hated it in my Charvel San Dimas. Go figure.

Just go back from rehearsal, using my JB loaded Charvel San Dimas. This guitar is wicked by the way, flat black, single JB one volume and a floyd, thats it!!!
The guitar sounded great for everything I thru at it! Great clear lead tone and nice rythem tones as well. Also sounded great clean, as long as I worked the volume on the guitar it was all there!!

Now I tryed a JB in my stat many moons ago and it never sounded like this!!
The strat has 250k volume and tone pots, which may have had something to do with it!

Matt! Welcome to the forum, I love your youtube vids, I actually posted some of them in other threads when people were asking about Super Distortion and Custom in a Les Paul. That is some great effing tone, thanks for posting those.

+1. There are some overtones in the JB that I can't put my finger on. Can't specifically identify what they are, but there is just a shrill anoying quality to the JB that affects the subconscious, that, if I had to listen to it for more than a couple minutes, I would either go insane or want to hurt someone.

I've tried a JB (not in a lp, but in several guitars), and was not disappointed, but being the Tool fan I am, I was not satisfied. After much much searching, the best and closest thing to the AJ tone is definately ceramic magnets, and the pain killer by bare knuckle nailed it for me. I was blow away, and my pickup search was over.

A bit off topic, but you get the idea. If you want some jones tones, go ceramic.

The JB is probably the best lead pickup I've ever used.

However, it's also the worst rhythm pickup I've ever used.

It's got a harsh bright to it that PAF types don't seem to have. You can dial it back a bit with the tone pots, but it doesn't dial back as well as a PAF either.

I'm not a Les Paul kinna guy but the JB seems to sound quiet good in a LP using MattThorpe's fingers anyway...........
I had one in a 79 strat and I thought it to be very 80s rock w/ a Marshall.

I'm looking for a Adam Jones + Omar Rodríguez López tone, and I think the JB won't take me anywhere close to that tone.

Maybe a Custom Custom, or a Custom 5 will take me there :cool2:

I love the JB in a Gibson. The midrange, brightness, and all of the things that many of you hate, actually works for me. MattThorpe's video is pretty much my ideal tone. I do love the Custom in a Flying V, though.

I have a JB in the bridge of my Custom. It sounds good there. I don't think it would be what I want as a neck (have a 59 there) though.

I'm sticking with the JB is NOT for the bedroom shredder. In a band context - it shines. and it rules for ANYTHING 80's...

JB to me gives one a reason to have at least 2 LP type guitars.Cause what it does with a good dose of gain is a Tone standard but clean its not as good to me.Having it splitable makes it much more versatile.Want to have in the tone palate somewhere.

I had one in the bridge of my old Ty Tabor Yamaha, and It did sound very nice split.
