a few months ago i had my explorer (w/ JB in bridge) in drop Db (for anthrax stuff) and it sounded monstrous

is that a good thing?

Personally, I hate the JB in the bridge, and would stick with the EMG's. To each his own, though.

How could anybody not like a JB? I believe I'm going to quit reading this forum for all of the stupid people! The JB works in any tuning, any music, you could put one on a mandolin and it would be badass.

Having an opinion and searching for the tone in my head makes me stupid?

It works, but for many styles, and metal in particular, there are just better pickups out there.

I personally don't like how the JB is voiced. It doesn't track tight enough, or have a big or tight enough low end. I also dislike the high-mid spike, and it isn't aggressive enough for me when playing rhythm.

Does the EMG 81 not have the same upper mid spike as the JB? And it crunches like hell. I could be wrong but I believe it has that spike. I can imagine how the JB wouldn't be aggressive enough for you though.

the upper mids is what i love about the JB, cause theyre so much smoother and usable than the mids of the DD. though everything else on the DD is damn near perfect IMO. the mids are just too grainy

I've been digging the 81 lately...I have it in the bridge of my Stealth. I've got some clips to compare that and the 85, I'll host em later.
