JB in swamp ash guitar?

Re: JB in swamp ash guitar?

I had one in my ash Strat and the upper mid spike was a little to much for me. That said the pickup wasn`t harsh a trebly .

Re: JB in swamp ash guitar?

I put one in a Tele awhile back. I also had 250k pots. I thought it sounded really good. The 250k pots on both the vol and tone seem to really make the upper mids a little more polite.

Re: JB in swamp ash guitar?

I thought it sounded awful in a swamp ash G&L invader I had. JB + Swamp Ash + Floyd Rose = UGGGHHH!!!!! Tinny Icepick.

Re: JB in swamp ash guitar?

I have a JB in my alder lynch..and I love it..I figured with swamp ash the mids would be tamed a little bit because there's less mids in swamp ash than alder? maybe it's cause swamp ash has more natural highs than make the high mids of the JB sound worse?

Re: JB in swamp ash guitar?

doesnt jerry cantrell have his JB in a swamp ash G&L??

his tone is pretty happening even though those BOGNERS help a bit!

Re: JB in swamp ash guitar?

I've got a JB in the bridge spot of my ash body Robin Medley. I like it better than the TB5 Custom that was there originally. Maybe that guitar is just a little darker sounding because it sounds edgy but not overly so. Also, pinch harmonics failed most of the time when the Custom was in there. They work fine with the JB. That may be because the guitar itself has a darker sound.

I also notice open position chords sound a little more jangly, probably because of the JB's extended high freq response. I couldn't tell you what value pot the guitar has. I'd expect 500K because the other two pickups are Duncan Strat Hot stack humbuckers but I can't swear to that. The pickup is also mounted directly to the body. Some say that has an effect on tone. If it does, my ears are probably not sensitive enough to notice.

Re: JB in swamp ash guitar?

Sounded spectacular in the Swamp Ash Tom Anderson Strat I just worked on. Big, smooth, bouncey and super lively. That guitar did have 250K pots and there was absolutely NO HARSHNESS whatsoever. I wouldn't have minded it being a little brighter to be honest, but because the other two pickups were Duncan Stack Plus Noiseless pickups I didn't want to dial in any more treble from the amp or they would've been brighter than I wanted. Wasn't the JB made to sit in Jeff Beck's ash tele?

Yep. And used with 250K pots.

I like the JB with 500K pots but it is brighter with 500K pots than with 250K pots. To "bright" to some ears...although it's not actually bright in terms of having extended treble response: it's "bright" in terms of having that "midrange peak" that people alude to.

In truth, I don't know if having an upper "midrange peak" actually describes the JB or not...but that's the way players hear it and describe it.

With 500K pots, I hear the JB as having a certain edge or cut or hardness to the tone that hurts my ears if I'm standing to close my speakers and I'm playing really loud. With 250K pots that doesn't happen at all...it's very smooth and pleasant and has a nice bounce to the tone.

When I heard Scott Miller playing his Strat with a JB I heard no annoying midrange peak of any kind...and the same is true of the Tom Anderson guitar I jus worked on that had the JB with 250K pots.

Maybe the owner of Seymour Duncan can chime in and and tell us about his own #1 guitar?!

I did ask Evan to ask Seymour about the Tele/Gib and he said that Seymour said he uses 250K pots with the Jazz and JB in that guitar.

In all honesty, the JB sounds very smooth with 250K pots and I'd probably use a little more treble or presence on my amp to give it a little more bite.

With 500K pots it has a little more bite than I want and with 250K pots it has just a little less bite than I prefer.

The Custom Custom with 500K pots is actually brighter than the JB with 250K pots....and the CC is often thought of as being very smooth and even lacking a little in high end by some players who crave a brighter tone.

Re: JB in swamp ash guitar?

good advice one and all =D is there any way to tell what pots are in a guitar??? I'm not good with the electronics aspect...

anywho ,it's got a screamin demon in it right now...I guess I could always just try it the hell out and see if I like it

I'm also considering a couple other pups...a rio grande BBQ..or maybe even a bare knuckle war pig...but those are pricey

If your guitar came stock with humbuckers they're probably 500K. Lew
