jb/jazz combo for agile 3500 guitar

hi all i earlier posted on a different thread but as the topic kinda morphed i thought id start anew. on monday im having duncans put in an agile 3500 left handed model at rondo music. i have already purchased the jazz neck and jb bridge and monday is the date they install. fyi i have never played a les paul or clone and don't want to lose what is hear is the fuller les paul tone. im a bit afraid after reading up on this site that the jb jazz may give away some of the fullness of the les paul tone...are my fears unfounded? the agile 3500 specs are a mahogany body with a 3/4 inch maple top and an ebony fretboard. they say that this combo may make for a brighter sound to begin with and thats why i'm second guessng my hot humbuckers combo. HELP. as im already stretching my budget (as well as my wifes tolerance level) in getting the 3500 i really cant start paying for different pickups with the assiciated install charges. specifically i was wondering if anybody up here actually uses the jazz/jb combo and can give some feedback. also wanted some comparitive feedback on the jb bridge/59 neck combo...would this help the guitar retain more of a fuller tone as opposted to the jazz neck? how about a config with something and the custom custom? the reason im asking is because i have read posts saying the jb/jazz is great in a strat but not in a less paul type. any feedback and all opinions are welcome...please remember moday is my due date :) here is the link to the agile/rondo page with the guitars specs with the standard pickups i will be replacing...again thanks all....http://www.rondomusic.net/al3500presthsb.html
and here is the rondo agile comparison page if anybody is interested http://www.rondomusic.net/alspec.html.

Re: jb/jazz combo for agile 3500 guitar

if anyone can give a comparison of the custom custom bridge and jazz neck vrs the jb bridge jazz neck for les paul (agile) guitar that would be fantastic.

Re: jb/jazz combo for agile 3500 guitar

You'll be fine with those pickups. I wouldn't suggest a 59n at all, I find it to be muddy and boomy, expecially under gain.

I dislike the Custom bridge, but that's because I don't like ceramic magnets period. The C5, however, is just about the perfect pickup in mohogany, especially through an EL34 amp.

If you end up not liking the pickups, you can always use the 21-day exchange through Duncan, and get a new pickup free.

thanks, since i'm so new to this i really have to rely on peoples advice and i think i will be sticking with the jb/jazz combo.

Re: jb/jazz combo for agile 3500 guitar

I think that is a great combo for that guitar. I just happen to have a mahogany body/maple cap guitar with that combo and it is awesome. They probably mean that it's brighter than a mahogany without the maple cap, but it will still retain its warmth and won't be as bright as a Strat.

Enjoy!

socalsteve nice to hear the review im all psyched up again for monday....

I'm glad I helped ease your concerns. That pickup combo is very popular, for good reason.

Re: jb/jazz combo for agile 3500 guitar

they will sound great - especially compared to the stock pups ... if they sound too bright, you can always swap them out .... think about learning how to do the soldering yourself in order to save the money and time associated with getting a tech to swap them out ... remember to tweak with the tone knobs and pickup height if at first they sound brighter than you hope for .... and remember to back off on the volume knob, especially on the JB, when you want a cleaner sound ... guys who just dime all the knobs and let er rip lose the full range of what those pups can do ... let us know how it turns out ...

and if you feel like it isnt 'full' enough .. try an alnico II pro in the neck and a 59 in the bridge

cheers

I have the JB/JAZZ set in a les paul custom and HAD the custom pup in that guitar before
I liked the JB more, the custom is very good but the JB has more MOJO.
the JB seems to sing more and has a crunch that cant be beat and harmonics to die for :32:

Re: jb/jazz combo for agile 3500 guitar

Anytime you pull a PAF style pup out of a Les Paul and install something more modern sounding, you lose alot of the LP vibe IME.

The JB sounds good, as does the Jazz, but I don't care too much for them in a LP..mainly because I LIKE the classic LP sound, and the JB takes away from that.

I personally prefer the SH5 (Custom) as a bridge pup in a LP (or other gibson), as it still retains some PAF vibe. The JB doesn't have the lower mids/low end ooomph...kinda defeats the purpose of having a LP unless ya jes like the body shape and sustain.

IMO of course.
