Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

Either one would be a HUGE upgrade from the stock pickups.

Beyond that it's pretty much a "taste" thing.

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

which way would you go? For rock, classic rock and some metal?

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

It would depend on what the guitar sounded like acoustically.

But honestly, after trying a LOT of a different pickups the JB is one my least favorites, I tend to rip 'em out ASAP.

There's a real dentist drill quality to my ears...

But a LOT of people like 'em so there's no accounting for my lack of taste!

HAHAHAHA!

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

Go with the JB/Jazz or JB/59 but definately go with the JB:smokin: Jazz will be brighter than the 59.

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

I feel the same way about the JB, its a love it or hate it pickup. I say the Custom in the bridge and a Jazz, 59, or pearly gates in the neck would be a safer bet.

It's funny how the JB is either a love it or hate it pickup, there is no grey area!!! I myself love it and think it would be perfect for the tones you described. I never have been a Jazz(n) fan, there is something going on in it's freq spectrum that doesn'y play nicely with my style and gear. If you want a classic neck tone vibe with more cut and balls, go for the Pearly Gates Neck, it's wonderful. I've only used the 59 neck so I can't comment on the bridge model but I find the neck version a tad to bassy in les paul type guitars.

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

What makes the JB / jazz combination so popular?

Probably, the fact that its Seymour Duncan's personal favorite set. I believe he's had this set in his Tele-Gib for decades. ;)

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

I've got a 59 neck / Custom bridge in mine, and it covers everything you described. Go for it!

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

I don't care for the JB in a LP. It seems to overlap too many of the guitar's natural frequencies and I feel it covers up too much of a LP's natural tone.

Out of the pickups you mentioned, I'd use a Jazz in the neck and a 59 in the bridge. If you have access to the whole Duncan catalog, go with either a Pearly Gates set or a Pearly Gates in the neck and a Custom in the bridge.

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

I couldn't be happier with the JB/Alnico II Pro set in my explorer. I think, for you, the JB bridge with the 59,Alnico II PRo, Jazz or Pearly Gates neck will be a great deal

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

please tell me more on that convination of pearly gates (n) and custom custom (B)..

Nobody mentioned the Custom Custom, what was mentioned was the Custom. Plain and simply, it will do everything you want perfectly. The PG in the neck, a brighter neck pickup that is versatile and mathes the Custom better than ANY pickup.

JB bridge and Jazz bridge pickup in the neck position. That will cover lots of ground.

The jazz bridge in the neck position gives you a little more life than the jazz neck version. Also, it is less bassy than the 59n in a Les Paul.

All of the Customs work well in a Les Paul also. For classic rock and 80s rock, the C5 is a good choice.

Confused yet? Everybody has an opinion here that is a little different from the next guy but look, you really can't go wrong with a JB/Jazz combination. Your tone will be vastly improved. The other combinations mentioned will work great also because all Duncan pickups are premium stuff. Just do it!

Hello,

I have one question about de JB/JAzz combinition. When i look in the tonechart is see a big difference in output between de JB (high output) and the Jazz. isn't that a problem when you have those two in your guitar.

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

I'd still go with the '59 set over a JB/Jazz combo any day of the week.

'59's are kinda standard for a reason...their voicing is IMO, more complementary to different guitars & styles of playing then the JB & Jazz, which come off as having a more stylized & specifc voice.

I like the Jazz neck a lot in the right guitar. I've got one in my Hamer superstrat and another one in my ash PRS...but that's going to move to the lemondrop Paul soon enough. The Jazz in the PRS is just a little too bright and the Alnico II in the Paul is a hair too muddy and illdefined...so I'm gonna swap those around in the near future.

Re: JB & jazz or 59's please help

I love the JB. But I really hate the Jazz.

I do absolutely love the 59 set. Very versitile, and best for metal and classic rock and whatnot. I would suggest the 59 set for a Les Paul guitar.
