JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

Which would be better for hard rock, grunge, metal, thrash, heavy metal and alternative? Including other styles similar to those.
It would most likely be in an hh telecaster with a coil split.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

They would be both good, imho. If you play more than just a bit of alternative/indie, than a tiny bit better custom/jazz. Cheers!

Another vote for the Custom/Jazz. I think it does more things well. I also think the Custom sounds better split.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

I never hear Custom/Jazz - but I think they would be a great combo.

That would be my more hard rocking combo vs the more all-around JB/Jazz.

Really just depends on if you want JB punch in the middle, or Custom scream and thump on the highs and bottom.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

JB if you're more of a lead player, i suppose. What makes it inferior for rhythm playing makes it better for lead playing - with this pickup.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

Thanks guys that's great, custom/jazz it is! It would be good for both lead and rhythm I take it?

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

I have an inkling that it will sound just fine.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

Even the JB isn't bad for rythm. The Custom will have a little more on the top and bottom, maybe a bit less of the high mids that the JB has. But still not as scooped as the Custom 5.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

hard rock
Could go either way. Rhythm or lead? I can name far more guys who use a JB than a Custom, though.

JB (Jerry Cantrell?)

Could go either way. Rhythm or lead?

JB (Alex Skolnick?)

heavy metal
What's the difference between metal and heavy metal?

alternative
I have no clue.

I don't see how you arrived at a Custom (or a Jazz to go with it for that matter). I'd love to see a list of players in the above genres who use a Custom.

Depends on the guitar, the band, the style of music, whether there's another guitar player and what pickup is being used by the other guitar player, in addition your role as a player. The amp and cab also make a huge difference. Some players will naturally gravitate to one over the other. I've used both. If my job is to blend in without drawing attention then it's the Custom. If my job is to stand out then it's the JB.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

Yes.
And every time I listen to old Megadeth, I am reminded that I don't think that it's bad for rythm.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

The JB is a polarizing pickup and this is very evident when you read opinions about it. The Custom doesn't stand out like the JB, except for the way in which the ceramic magnet delivers its high end.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

No doubt. You either love it or hate it. But that makes the Custom sound lukewarm and I don't know if I agree with that.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

If you are in a 1 guitar band, I like the Custom's EQ better. The JB is good for a 2 guitar band.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

I think there are too many factors at play to make a generalization, beyond personal preference, of course. It's no secret that some of you guys simply do not like the JB.

Hard rock with one guitar player? The JB has a long proven track record.

For a non-metal two guitar band I'd only use a JB if the other guitar player also uses a pickup that cuts, otherwise only if I have the specific role as a pyrotechnician. This could easily have to do with my being more comfortable using a Custom for rhythm, though.

My vote goes to the Custom for the bridge position. As you can read above, both the Custom and JB would work for the styles you are after, it's a matter of personal taste.
Check some sound samples of both the Custom and JB and see what appeals to you most.

I've used both and happen to prefer the Custom in general. That being said, there are some guitars (or band situations) where the JB just works better. In terms of output they're quite similar, but I find the custom to be a bit fatter and have tighter bass.

Re: JB/Jazz vs Custom/Jazz

They are both great pickups... However they do sound and feel different. If I was tracking guitars in heavier music I'd more ofte grab a Custom for rhythm and a JB for lead, then do the opposite for a few specific situations.

Basically Aceman nailed it:
Really just depends on if you want JB punch in the middle, or Custom scream and thump on the highs and bottom.
