JB jr. how versatile?

JB jr. sounds pretty bright might be good as a Strat bridge replacement. How good is it in clean?

Re: JB jr. how versatile?

It is indeed bright, with an upper mid clarity comparable to the full size JB. The clean sound is improved in parallel. That being said, it shines with at least some overdrive. It isn't a super versatile pickup, but what it does, it does really well.

Re: JB jr. how versatile?

I've found it to get lost easily in a typical band mix. I've seen a number of guitarists use various boosts to deal with this but they usually on succeed in annoying fellow band members and the audience. They do a lot better in a recording situation or when you have amps miked and a good sound man balancing things out. A good EQ pedal might help as well rather than a typical single coil oriented boost/overdrive that usually narrow the already compressed upper mid range further.

So you're saying with the JB Jr. you are either so quiet that you might as well not be playing or you are so loud you practically can't hear the singer? With no inbetween?

I have no experience with the JB Jr., but if it's anything at all like the full sized version, it should cut through with little trouble at any reasonable volume level.

Re: JB jr. how versatile?

I don't think 'cut' is ever an issue with any kind of JB, Jr or full size. Either one isn't a super versatile pickup, though. To be fair, there are not any high output pickups that I would call versatile.

Re: JB jr. how versatile?

I think the Lil 59 might do the trick. Pretty well balanced.

Hey Mincer, From what I play, classic rock, blues and some jazz fusion, I think the little 59 might be the one. What is your opinion?

Re: JB jr. how versatile?

Wouldn't necessarily call the JB Jr. versatile–it is definitely rocks though. Can be a bit harsh and bright but works very well in the bridge position of a Strat for light to high gain, IMO.

Out of all of the little humbuckers, the Little 59 would be my choice here.
