JB Jr in a Stratocaster

ImmortalSix

John Mayer's Mankini
I have one coming in the mail today --- what are your experiences with them?

I'll be putting it in the bridge position of my '96 MIA Stratocaster, that previously had a Little '59 neck in the bridge, and presently has an old-style Hot Rails in the bridge.

Hot Rails was uninspiring for my style of music. Good pickup, I just have to try 'em all before I figure out what's best for that guitar.

Re: JB Jr in a Stratocaster

I like the JB jr for the neck and middle but not the bridge. It is too bright, lacks output and warmth. If your looking for a good bridge pickup try the Dimarzio Fastrack II.

Re: JB Jr in a Stratocaster

i have one in mine, and i love it. its very responsive to picking, ie its dynamic.

very easy to get early VH/ ac/dc sound out of it.

the only complaint i have is that its not the warmest pickup

Re: JB Jr in a Stratocaster

Just got it in the mail, I will install it tonight and let you guys know what I think about it

yeah let us know, my borther is planning to get one as well.

btw. you mentioned "old-style hot rails pickup" earlier.
what's that?
Im asking cause i have what i think is an old make hot rails in the neck. cause the bridge pup (also hotrails) has a ceramic sealing, and is soldered in the back - green cover, and the neck pup looks like it was hand-made and hand taped (and i got it brand new).

Re: JB Jr in a Stratocaster

"Old Style" Hot Rails had two separate bobbins visible and were wrapped with ribbon. New Style Hot Rails are in a neat plastic housing, everything under one roof. The new ones have a green PCB backing and the old was...uh...black?

Mine's for sale if you want it, see the trading post.

Re: JB Jr in a Stratocaster

So I put the JB Jr. in my Strat and I LURVES IT!

It' is fat, thick, round, warm, punchy, everything great I wanted in a bridge pickup.

It seems like JBs as well as JB Jr.s vary widely in the love/hate zone, but you can put me in the love camp.

Clips coming soon, you know how I do.

so i def. have a new-make in the bridge, and old-make in the neck.

i wonder if you put old vs. new if there's any difference in tone.

That's interesting. Did you wire it to the stock 250k ohm Strat volume control?

I suspect the JB Jr may be voiced to sound best with a Strat's 250k Ohm pots. I had one in my custom ESP that originally came with ESP dual rail humbuckers, and probably 500k ohm pots, and it was too harsh and bright. To make things worse, that guitar has an ebony fretboard, ash body and maple top. Bright!

I've recently moved from the JB hate camp to the love camp, but only because I bought a guitar wired with 250k ohm pots, and finally heard what Seymour was really thinking when he came up with the JB.
