i have a jb/59 combo in my les paul custom ...i love the 59 in the neck but the jb to me lacks a lot of punch for what im looking for....i play mostly hard rock like guns n roses ac/dc stuff like that and also some metal like metallica and racer x speed stuff....so what do u guys think would beef up my les paul??

Re: JB lacks the punch i need

DD/59, just ask Robert S. You want more punch, then the Distortion is your pup. Good luck.

Re: JB lacks the punch i need

the 3 pickups i have in mind are the custom the DD and the C5....i just need some opinions to help me choose

Re: JB lacks the punch i need

OK, this is MPO. If you want aggressive, Custom. More harmonics, JB, Loud and Trashy, DD. I own a lot of pups, must arnt in guitars right now. Iv had better results with a Screamin Deamon than a C5 for hair Metal. Just remember, you can allways turn down the gain on your amp, but you cant turn the output of your pickup up. Learn to control the gain on your amp. With all that said, the Custom would be the pup i would reccommend. It will do it all. Good luck in your tone quest.

thanks a lot RACERX....i think im gonna go with the custom....and ur right about being able to control the gain but not the output of the pickup ...i hope this is the right one for me

It will be, brother! Believe me...I play your styles as well and the SH-5 fits beautifully. Aggressive, tight, ballsy, thick, and not to mention it has quite a punch to it! Love it! Favorite pup at the time! Good luck.

Re: JB lacks the punch i need

IMHO if the JB lacks punch you need to look at the rest of your rig. AC/DC and GnR can be done on vintage type HBs (because it was) and the heavier stuff you listed can be easily done with the JB.

The C-5 is less agressive than the JB.

The DD will add some balls but it is somewhat less smooth than the JB under some circumstances.

What amp and pedals if any are you using?

That was my first thought too. A good pickup through a great amp will sound GREAT. A great pickup through a mediocre amp will sound mediocre. :)

Re: JB lacks the punch i need

im using a crate glx 212 and i have a boss ge-7 eq pedal......ive also played it through my friends marshall avt 20 and he has a DD in his les paul and it is a lot thicker and punchy than my jb in the same amp. i have also read that the JB works better with thin body guitars. Could it be that its just not not right in my les paul or maybe there could be a technical problem?

The C-5 is less aggressive than the JB but I never had issues with punch and the C-5. I just wasn't crazy about the JB overall but it wasn't a punch issue. My current favorites are the C-5, Custom, and Rio BBQ.....all are versatile for ALL styles and very punchy. In fact, I can get thundering punch out of my Gibson Burstbucker Pros. As Robert stated....look at your amp...pedals...guitar...etc. Maybe it's not the pup.
