JB neck model?

Checking the Comparison Chart I don't see any specs for a Neck JB model, yet I recently got a guitar with a TB-4 in the bridge and an SH-4 in the neck, and the screw coil is closest to the neck, with the logo being on the slug coil.
On another guitar I have that came with a JB in the neck, the screws were on the inner/logoed coil.

Is this simply swapping the coils around or what? (too lazy to hook up the meter  )

Re: JB neck model?

Probably just a shop floor custom to swap the logo's around. As far as a Jb neck model, well, that's the Jazz.

Re: JB neck model?

I'm guessing Seymour Duncan himself would say the Jazz is the true JB neck, but using pickup logic whereas the JB is an Alnico 5 version of the Duncan Distortion, Then the Duncan Distortion neck model (old name was Seymourizer and Seymourizer II) with a Alnico 5 instead of it's ceramic would make that a more likely JB neck pickup.

Re: JB neck model?

There is no JB neck model, some people do use the JB in the neck when they are more concerned about neck soloing tones than cleans.

Closest there is to a JB neck is an SH-6n magnet swapped to A5, as far as I know.

I'm planning to try the SH-4 neck thing myself soon. What do you think of the SH-4 in the neck? (Assuming they truly are JBs, have you checked with a multimeter?)

Benjy_26 is right, a lot of people think of the Jazz as the JB neck, because of the Hot Rod set.

[Thanks Fusion1 for making my post redundant :)]

Re: JB neck model?

I've read somewhere there used to be a JB neck model (Dave Murray used it on his strat during the early 90's), but it got discontinued as the Jazz neck was basically the same pickup.

Re: JB neck model?

I had the JB in the neck of an Ibanez RG.
Sounded really good, had a push pull to split it for cleans. Sounded really good at that. And it was massive for leads. I had to set it pretty low though, or it got really nasty. Which you might like. :D

I've got this in my LP right now, and it's much, much better than the DD neck. It's still hot, but it's much more musical than the ceramic. I tried an A2, and it just mushed right out. The scoop of the A5 helped counteract the fat mids of the neck position of the mahogany guitar. I get some nice clean tones, especially with a tiny little push from an overdrive. The leads have a vocal quality to them, I would say, which I also hear as a bit of a half-cocked wah sound. All in all, I don't think it's the best neck humbucker, but it does have workable tones.

Despair, you are welcome.
cokecoley, I think you are thinking of the Seymourizer pickup which became the Duncan Distortion. Weird as I never knew Dave Murray used Duncans back in the 70's - 80's as he ha a Super Distortion / PAF setup as far as I knew. Since the 90's he's been using a strat with Hot Rails and JB Jrs though. Maybe that's what you're referring to?

Re: JB neck model?

I had a friend who was in a Thrash metal band here in Chicago in the early 90s and he used the JB in the neck with a Custom in the bridge. I've tried that myself as well. The JB can be a very cool neck pup, you just have to sink it low and keep in mind that it will be VERY hot. It's not what I look for in a neck pick up, but if you use your neck pup for fast or very hot leads, it can be a great.

I'm referring to the period 1990-93:
-Red strat, black pg, JB/Jazz
-Red strat, black pg, JB, 2 hot single coils
-White Jackson strat, white pg, Dimarzio super distortion (+PAF?) pups

Dave has never used jb jrs, that's Janick Gers.

Re: JB neck model?

Well I learned something new about Dave Murray. I will say the 90s werent too kind to Maiden as I lost all interest once Adrian Smith left and that 3rd guitarist showed up Jannick Jers. Not a fan of his at all. You got me though even though that was a prett weak time for Maiden.

Re: JB neck model?

I remember Musician's Friend selling the JB "neck" pickup. It's just a regular bridge JB with the logo swapped around and the polarity reversed so that you can use it in the neck and have it look "correct" and have a middle-position sound that isn't out of phase.

Re: JB neck model?

The only JB for neck position that SD is selling now, it´s the JB jr., a strat sized humbucker.
I tried it, it´s just awfull, stay away from it.
Muddy, dark, with no highs, no definition, no nothing. The tiny pole pieces usually are located out from the string spacing....yeargh.
Don´t know if the bridge position sounds good, never tried one.

Re: JB neck model?

It's definitely not a sticker-swap. Haven't metered it yet, but I'm positive it'll read as a JB.

As for how I like it, I only like a JB in the neck, never could stand them in the bridge. The bass always sounds choked and it doesn't have quite enough push for my tastes. I don't care who uses/used them and who likes them and why or who it was designed for or how popular it is or how many they sell, I don't like it in the bridge.

As for the JBJr in the bridge, I love it. I had one in a 1990 Jackson Warrior (the ones with the 2 slanted singles for a bridge pickup) and it kicked ass. Sounded like a Distortion to me. Paired with a neck-model Hot Rails right next to it in the other bridge slot and it was Armageddon with 6 strings.

Re: JB neck model?

I'm letting the suspense soak in

Just metered them - both read 8.17K (metered on the pots - separate Vols - both CTS 500K).
