JB Problem?

I have a strat with a JB wired directly to a pot. I will get good full sound for 10 minutes then it will sound like the volume knob has been turned down. Now it always sounds like that. Is it the pot or the pup? Will cold hurt pots?

Hmmm... how old are the pickup & pot? If the pot is old, replace it. They're pretty cheap, and a new one wouldn't hurt anyway

The pup is a year old the pot has just been put in but I bought it a few years ago.
Will leaving pots in the extreme cold affect them? My replacements have been in the garage all winter

Could very likely be the problem. IMHO, the cheapest & easiest option is go buy a brand new one, and see if it fixes it. Actually, if you haven't done this already, unsolder everything and hook it all back up. That's cured many a head-scratchers for me

I tried redoing it. I will do that again and mess with different pots.

Not to offend, but are you sure of your wiring? Some of your solder joints could be bad. Check em. Specifically check the jack, pot, and red+white lead(from the jb) solder joints. Does the Volume pot work perfectly when it does work? Also, there may be a bare hot signal from the pup shorting to the ground.

When you take a guitar from extremely cold conditions into the warmth, you are going to get a lot of condensation formed on your instrument. If that gets into your pickup, it can take an age to get out. The water will short out the coils.
Take your scratch plate off the guitar and leave it in a warm place for a week and see what happens. Don't put the rest of the guitar in a warm place though!!

Avoid extreme temperatures at all times.

The pup was never left out only the unused pot. The wiring has to be fine since it works. The volume works when everything is working.

It could be a hot touching the ground but everything is taped off well.

I would guess it's the pot! Though I had a similar problem on my ibanez pub.
There it was the connection between the wire from the coils and and the cable. I'm not shure if it was short or got bad contact. When I touched the cable between the coils and the tape i got full sound back sometimes.

It works. USed a different pot and cut some lead and started over. The solder joints may have been bad. Rocks now
