JB Replacement: Distortion/Invader/?

Re: JB Replacement: Distortion/Invader/?

I use the JMP-1 combo, and my Fast Track 2 sounds amazing. It's basically a single coil sized version of the super distortion. The super distortion is probably my all time favorite pickup in strats for chunky metal riffs. Listen to old Iron Maiden and you could see why. If that isn't hot enough, then go with an Invader if you like it. The super distortion is a pickup missing in Duncan's line; its EQ has treble/mid/bass at about 5/7/8. The DD, JB, and Custom all have slightly more highs than lows, so they don't pack that low end crunch like the hot rails and super distortion do that I love so much. Might want to check it out.... it's a legend.

Doubtful at best!!!

Its the popular rumor around here and somehow there is some truth behind it, I will have to find it though. I have seen it before.
Word around here is that the JB, distortion, and invader are all in the same family. Plus, look at the Duncan pickups that are without a doubt different than the rest of the pack, the Seths, Pearly gates, Scremin Demon, dimebucker, and there is probally another one or so that I am missing. What do they all have in common? Price!!!! The are all there own one off design and thats probally why they command a higher price. As fas as the different DC reading of the DD, JB, invader, thats mainly just jive. I have seen 17.5 JB's when they are supposed to be like 16.4 and I have seen pickups that read alot lower than listed such as a 13.5 custom when it is supposed to read 14.1. Look at the neck pickups, they are all around 7.5K. Do you think each one of them is their own unigue design as far as wind goes? There is no less than 7 different models that have pretty much the same DC resistance as the other.

BTW, you mentioned putting an A5 in an Invader with smaller poles. Did you put slugs in it also and did you take out the other 2 ceramic magnets out and use standard spacers?

You can't put "slugs" in a pickup designed to hold 12 adjustable poles. I just put some DiMarzario Super Distortion polepieces in it and they fit perfectly.

Otherwise, with all due respect, it sounds like you don't know very much about what makes pickups different. It really isn't just the magnet or just the number of turns (DC resistance) as you seem to think. I know people who make pickups and have talked at length with them for years and the pattern of the wind (among many other factors) really does make a difference.

Seymour himself is hip to all of this and then some. That is why the Seth and the 59 and the Jazz and the Alnico 2 Pro (all within 0.5k of each other on the neck models and almost as close on the bridge models) all sound so different.

thats the dude i remember writing about the anderson being bass heavy and comparing it to the distortion.
i was just about to get a breed for my cort, but just by remembering the anderson...REGRET

yeah the H3 is around the same ballpark of being as hot as the DD. its kinda like the DD without the big mid spike and with some more low end. i wouldnt say its bass HEAVY cause that kinda implies that it sounds too dark, which its not really. while it can be compared to the DD in a few aspects, its pretty damn unique sounding (in a good way). apparently its really uniquely constructed too. i emailed anderson about it a while ago. they said its ceramic magnet, but the coils are taller than regular pickups and (i dont know about magnet placement but this is what they said) the magnet sits vertically between the coils but doesnt touch any of the steel. maybe somebody a bit more well-versed in pickup construction could clarify what kinda difference it makes?
