JB replacement

First off, hello to all in the forum. This is my first post here. I just picked up a Schecter C1 Blackjack which comes with the JB/59n combo. I am not quite satisfied with the low end of the JB and am considering swapping it out with the SH-5 Custom. I want a more aggressive low end in the bridge position (Chug) while retaining similar characteristics of the JB. I am playing the heavier of the metal styles through either a Mesa Subway Rocket or a Rect-O-Verb. The guitar is composed of Mahogany and has a set Maple neck and Rosewood fingerboard. I have an Invader (SH-8b) in another guitar (basswood body) and I like it quite a bit but I'm not sure if the Invader will complement the mahogany well since my understanding is that mahogany is quite dark. Does anyone here have an Invader installed in a mahogany axe? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Re: JB replacement

The Custom might be your dog, the Deamon is nice too.

Re: JB replacement

Hi welcome to the forum....
yeah maybe custom is a better choice though i don't think the JB lacks low end if it's set up nicely...

Re: JB replacement

Welcome to the forum.

A Custom would probably work.

But check out Dimarzios too.
The Super Distortion is my personal favorite for classic metal crunch ala Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Can handle more extreme styles as well. One of the guitarists from Deicide uses it.
X2N would work too, Chuck Schuldiner (Death) and countless other 80's thrash guitarists used it. A bit too hot to go with a Mesa, tho.

Re: JB replacement

I replaced the JB in my Gibson LP Custom with a Duncan Custom and I couldn't be happier. It is very similiar but with a punchier output and a smoother overall frequency response. The low end on my JB was kind of undefined and it's much better with the Custom.

Re: JB replacement

You might also want to tr the Rio Grande BBQ. You could get great results with the Custom, JB, or BBQ. The BBQ is warmer like the JB but has a fatter low end.

Duncan Distortion perhaps.

Yeah, I've been eyeballing that pup too. I'm just concerned about the lower end. The tone chart seems to indicate that the Distortion is a JB with boosted midrange (perhaps a JB with a Ceramic bar). I'm sure there is an über tonemeister in here that harbors such knowledge.

Re: JB replacement

The Custom will nail everything you'd want...and your mother if you're not careful!! It's a crazy pup I tell you!

Crazy, aggessive, and tight, while also well rounded and not harsh by any means. A must. You won't be dissapointed!

Re: JB replacement

Alright guys. I ordered the SH-5 from musicians fiend :). As soon as I get the thing installed, I'll post my results.

Re: JB replacement

I installed the Custom last night and couldn't put the guitar down! Needless to say, my expectations were met! The JB is a nice pickup but the Custom fit the bill for me. It's really surprising how the percieved loudness with this pup is! Thanks again for all of the recommendations. :)
