JB + single coil

Hi everybody, I'm new on this forum.

I will have soon a custom made alder strat, with fixed bridge and maple fingerboard.
The guitar will have full size JB in the bridge a single in the neck, the question is: which one?
Unfortunately all suggestion I found in internet are about a JB + strat pickups, but I'm not looking for a strat sound.

Since I REALLY love the alnico2 pro I have in a Tele, I was thinking about the STR-2 Hot Rhythm (because of similar parameters and higher output) but I'm not sure if it's a good match with the JB.
Would you recommend it? Or which one? I need one that will not be overpowered by the JB (or not so much).

Secondary question: I'm also thinking about a full size Pearly Gates if I don't find a good single. Do you think this will be a good match?

Re: JB + single coil

If you want a single-sized pickup in the neck, why not simply go for the H-H setup and be done with it? Strat-sized humbuckers are generally voiced to retain a Stratty tone while offering the beefier output and hum-cancelling qualities of a full-sized humbucker.

That said, you might try a few of the Lil/Jr models - JBJr, Lil59, Lil Screamin Demon, etc.

no.... I DON'T want a single sized humbucker, and I DON'T want a Stratty tone. I'm more into a Tele type sound, but with enough output to be balanced with the full size JB I will have in bridge position.

Re: JB + single coil

hmm.. I think the tone of a quarter pound or a hum cancelling would be very different from an a2pro...

Re: JB + single coil

You're making it a little hard here.....but we love a challenge ;-)

Its almost a Goldilocks thing, not too cold not too hot...I'll explain

The 'hot' pickups will do well against the JB, and not sound thin, however you say you're not looking for this.

The Alnico 2 pups will sound strat-like, as they are voiced more traditionally - they will also sound weak and underpowered c/w the JB.

My suggestions are

one of the stacks, hum cancelling but still sound a bit single-coil like.
texas hot antiquity - slightly higher o/p strat pickup
a warm bridge s/c in the neck (as they are wound hotter anyhow)
a hotter tele p/u (teles are stronger anyhow) like the 'Hot Rhythm' or 'Five-two rhythm'

Looking in Jackson's website, i have seen that the soloist SL-1 has a JB and two STK-S1 classic stack.... but I can't find the STK-S1 in Duncan's site, maybe it's a custom made pickup...?
Anyway I'm still convinced that the hot for tele in what i'm looking for.

Re: JB + single coil

My favorite pickup combo is the JB bridge-P90 neck in my LP. All 3 positions balance really nice. The middle position gets a lot more play time than any of my other pickup combos.

Re: JB + single coil

PATB Stack. You can thank me later for the awesome tone to come. It is the absolute best rock, single coil in the neck I have tried. It matches perfectly with the mid output humbuckers, JB/Custom/C-5, ect. It does not just work with the other PATB humbuckers.

Re: JB + single coil

also thinking at the vintage mini humbucker.

from the samples, seems it has a sound similar to a tele p.u., but it's hum cancelling and (I suppose) has an higher output

Re: JB + single coil

Have you thought of a twangbanger? I have never tried it in the neck, but i have one on the bridge of a duo sonic and it is very nice sounding pickup.
