JB Squeeling

Hi All

I have an ESP Eclipse with a chrome covered JB in the bridge, Is it normal for it to squeel on high gain settings? Im not 100% sure if this is a new thing or not as have been using it in a lower gain band but now in another band playing punk rock its very annoying and unplayable unless I have a noise gate or something.

The amp I have is a JVM215c which I know is a high gain amp and it does do it more on the Red channel but the squeel is weird. It does the same thing using my Hotone Ampero and Headrush FRFR cab using a high gain amp setting.

I have tested for ground continuity on everything and its all good, using Klotz Joe Bonamassa cables and tried others with the same effect. I have put foam under the pickup and rubber on the pickup springs.

I have a strat with a JB jr in the bridge and this doesnt squeel at all, they should be similar in output resistance which is odd. Could it be the chrome cover?

I have a video which shows the difference between the two guitars just dont look too much into the shitty playing. I was in a rush and I know i am standing over the amp, it does it when im over the other side of the room too.

Thanks

Have you tried lowering the pickup a bit? That might solve the problem.

Did it come covered? Might not be potted properly. Or might have got "un-potted" in the heat. That happens here in Florida if you leave a guitar in a car....

Optionally, squealing out of control and not caring could be very "punk"

Hi yes I have tried lowering the pickup and yes it did come covered. It does not get hugely hot here in the UK so I wouldn’t of thought that would be the issue, I may be wrong.

Doesn't solve your problem, but a noise gate is a handy thing to have anyways. All my guitars are annoying under high gain, noise gate comes in and makes everything okay.

My next guess, after the cover, is to check the gain staging. Hitting the input of the amp with more signal than it is used to seeing can cause this.

Is the cover stock, or did you add it on after you bought it?

If it's an add-on, a piece of foam tape between the slugs and the cover can kill some of the squeal.

If the guitar has been left inside a car ir even in the boot for a relatively short period, it could get "quite hot", even in dear old Blighty, and I've lived from St. Helier to Aberdeen. Yes, really. St. Helier as a small child, 11 years working in Aberdeen.

Just a couple of suggestions- Check the cover is properly grounded - install a dedicated ground wire if needs be - and try the guitar with a different amp or try a different guitar with your amp - to rule out problems with your amp.
