JB users-how do you like to EQ your amps?

Ok, so I was messing with the knobs this afternoon and I came up with this.
Presence-6
Resonance-6
Treble-5
Mid-5
Bass-3
Gain (on the lead OD2 channel)- 4

Do you guys come up with something similar? Obviously amps are going to be different, but I'm wondering if there's a trend in how a JB-equipped guitar and amp is EQ'd.

My tone is kind of thin, so I'm also wondering how you would go about making it a bit thicker and fuller.

really depends on the amp. IIRC when I played my Kramer thru my marshall, I just dialed the mids up a bit and added alittle low end. Hopefully Ill get to run my charvel thru a tube amp in a few days and Ill see then.. Have to get the heights dialed in too..

As a side note on my HK Blue 30 practice amp, I can run the eq flat and its good. Or add a touch of mids for flavor. for comparison, with the stock pups (TZ/EVO) it was very dark with flat eq and I had to add alot of mids to really get them to sing..

I don't think there should be a trend, I mean, EMG users are all over the place, the Triple Rectifier users too.

Then there's guys who scoop the **** out of everything, guys who want to take over their bassist's range, guys who like a narrow tone and make their Les Pauls sound like a Telecaster. It's all valid.

With that said, just like Bloodrose, I bump the mids and bass a fair bit. Treble and presence not so much, the JB cuts plenty on it's own.

Re: JB users-how do you like to EQ your amps?

Recto (Road King) = I will keep the low end down around 9 O'clock, other pups will hover around 10 or 11 O'clock
Mark V = somewhat flat EQ (knobs) and a bit of a "V" for the graphic, I don't really EQ it differently for the JB
Fish = I might bump the high end a touch for a JB
Recto Pre = It gets boosted and scooped ala Killswitch, JB gets no special treatment
Stiletto = Presence lowered to about 9 or 10 O'clock, the rest flat and crank it! 80's heaven!

I see what you mean. I was too assuming that people were going to reply talking about tones that are similar to the ones I chase.

Re: JB users-how do you like to EQ your amps?

BMT - 6, 6, 6. Metal.

Re: JB users-how do you like to EQ your amps?

Bass- 9 or 10

Mids- 6 or 7

Treble- around 1, but on some amps I need to bump it up

Presence- depends on the room, but usually around 6

Re: JB users-how do you like to EQ your amps?

If your sound is thin I'd be inclined to bump the mids a little more, knock the treble back to 4 and the presence down to 1.

I just love post like this where the post talks about amp setting, but does not mention the brand and model of the amp! :banghead:

Well I only have one real amp which I have listed in my signature. The Blackstar.

I tried turning the mids and bass up, and it's working really well.

Re: JB users-how do you like to EQ your amps?

Have you got rid of the thin sound ? Have you taken the presence down ?

Yeah, not much, but I turned down the treble and the presence a bit and it's working out pretty well. I'm going to try to record something so I can at least listen back and make sure I like it. I can't figure out how to download anything onto CD yet, so I won't be able to upload any clips soon.

Re: JB users-how do you like to EQ your amps?

i have many guitars and many amps... i have a Les Paul with a JB and a Jackson Dinky with a JB and i will play with the EQ's on the same amp with these 2 different guitars...

same goes for when i have the same guitar switching from amp to amp... each amp is different and each needs it's own tweeking per guitar and PU

I checked your sig as I was about to ask. haha.. Im glad to hear you are happier with your tone! The JB gets a bad rap for being shrill. It cuts thru the band VERY well and is (in most cases) shrill if your amp isnt set right.

I was afraid when I started using a JB again that it would be too toppy, Nope. Or I didnt want to add too much mid or bass cuz I wanted an 80s metal or Evh type of tone, but Ive found that it has enough highs that you can flavor in the mids or bass sometimes liberally depending on the amp.. Ive never played a blackstar except the small one, but IIRC they are supposed to be "British " flavored..

Thanks man. You are dead on with trying to get that 80s/VH type tone and that one might not think to crank up the bass too much. I thought the same exact thing, but I learned from this thread to change it and it sounds so sweet, and there's no more shrill.

Surprisingly, my settings seem to work on most amps, with just a bit of tweaking. That said, I'm a mostly a Marshall man.

Re: JB users-how do you like to EQ your amps?

Bass at 4 mids at 3 and treble at 7, Mig 100 head with a frankenstienish 412. Using the head as a clean channel.

Re: JB users-how do you like to EQ your amps?

You must specify if you're playing in a band or you're a bedroom rock hero. Eq is very different depending of the level you play and the speakers/cab you use (among many others variables). So, no... my eq isn't the same than yours.
