Re: Jb Versus Custom

i voted custom... use it on a Ibanez K7 axe trought Peavey Studio Pro and Triple XXX...most of the time play thrash/melodic death metal (f.e. the haunted, death, metallica to name a few) and lately a lot of progressive (dream theater)

it sounds perfect to my (to my bandmates also) ears ;)

Re: Jb Versus Custom

I was just having this debate with myself this morning. Last night my Soloist with the Distortion in it was sounding shrill to my ears, and I was wondering if I should swap out for either of the JB or the Custom that are sitting in other guitars.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

umm.. well, i got a JB in my alder SG (mah neck rose fretboard) it's cool, nice grind cool cleans and it cuts pretty nicely, but the heights can be a bit earpiercing at times.. i'd like o try a custom in it to see how that one fares.. so i cant really tell you one or the other

Re: Jb Versus Custom

basswood ibanez RG 550 with JB thru HR50+XL + 1960A
i had the custom for a week or two but it didn't made it thru my rig
style mainly punk/hardcore

Re: Jb Versus Custom

I voted Custom: Mahogany with maple cap Ltd ec-1000... Thicker and fuller to my ears than the JB through my marshall... more bottom without being muddy..

Re: Jb Versus Custom

Custom - I had it in in an RG570 through a flextone

It cut, and had a nice low end.

I was using the guitar for metal at the time.

SH5 metal demo

that was recorded aaaaaaaages ago (the guitar isnt even put together atm) so dont comment on playing ;)

Re: Jb Versus Custom

i find the JB more versatile than the Custom. I've tried both before and personally the JB suits my tastes more.
i play lots of 80's-90's metal and 80s rock and some pop as well

Jackson KE
JB bridge, Paf Pro neck

Re: Jb Versus Custom

voted custom, Great sounding allround rock pickup, i use it mainly for all types of rock, nice midrange and searing leads, use it with an all mahogany prs, sounds pretty balanced with a little sizzle to the treble.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

I think the JB is a tad sweeter and more versatile than the Custom, which is all balls. :laugh2:

JB...warmer and rounder.

:wrf:

How do you define warm? JB is a very thin sounding pup IMO Very shy of lows. It does have a good mid spike, but definately not warmer and rounder.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

Les Paul Classic with solid mohogany body and maple cap, mohogany neck with a rosewood fretboard and a JB in the bridge. Tone to die for. I can't say enough good things about the JB and I wouldn't trade it for any other pickup. :smoker: Oh yeah, I play Blues, 60's & '70's rock and lots of southern rock.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

I prefer the JB, but it can get really too bright in some guitars for me. I put a JB in my strat once, and hated it. I don't think a JB should go in anything but a mahogany body only guitar, but when you do, it's perfect tone. :)

Re: Jb Versus Custom

I've got a JB in my Ibanez Prestige (mahogany body, maple neck, flame maple top) and it sounds very open and airy IMO. Nice cleans, but I think this axe is taking away too much of it's brightness. Think JB with a massive amount of bass and mids and you've got my sound. Still an excellent shred pick up though. I am still dying to try the Custom, but I don't seem to have an axe for it right now

I thought the JB would be more popular, hmmm its funny how people like ceramics

It´s not the ceramics people like, but the way the pickup sounds. It has a very P.A.F.-ish character, particularly when compared to more "modern" pickups like the JB and the Distortion.

To try to subtly "find out" whether people prefer ceramics or not, I´d suggest the Polls "JB/Distortion" and "Custom-5/Custom". I´m sure the results would be quite different from here ;)

i find it warmer and rounder too how i remember.
The custom seems to be a bit harsh and scooped imo..
I have to say i didn't play much with the height of the custom!
Yeah Custom has more bottom end. But I like the JB palmmutes it's less compressed. I liked the Customs palmutes too listen to Zerbs clip :headbang: but just not for my style.
Though the last days i didn't like the JB but i think i've found the problem: the pu was just a bit to high :smack: I am such a stupid guy :laugh2:
