I had to go with the JB since it's been a great pick up for me. My main guitar is Mahogany (jb/jazz) and the sound is very warm and tight but not to ballsy to the point that my tube amp doesn't breath when cranked. I thought about trying a Custom but after looking at the specs it seems like it may be too ballsy with not much headroom for my taste.

dammit, I cant choose. I love the way the custom sounds in my LP, but I also love the way the JB sounds in my EBMM.

Dammit!

OK, OK, I'll go with the JB, just cause I'm using that one a lot more recently.

I voted neither because the distortion model is a JB with a large ceramic magnet
and to me combines the best of both those two(custom/JB)
at first i did not care for the DD but after some tweaking(lowering it from the strings,raising the poles,etc) the DD just has the power/tone i wanted
I have a JB and a custom as well but am using the DD now
it really is NOT a distortion pup at all, it is much more like a clean, tight pup with a lot OF balls :dance:

The JB with a the Ceramic magnet from a Custom is a great sounding pickup... a bit more subtle than the Distortion.

Its neat sometimes to have these discussions, but as you can see from all the responses, they're fairly useless. Sound is subjective, and it really depends on your preference, your guitar, AND your amp. Different amps have different sound qualities and natuarl EQ curves due to the way their built, speakers that are used etc. Do what Gearjonser said, take both, try them out with your rig. Its the only way to be sure.

JB. I put it in a Washburn BT-10 together with the jazz in the neck through a Boss GT-6. never been happier.

I personally appreciate our subjective discussions of achieving great tone ... just as I do proper spelling, but some may consider that fairly useless as well .

prefer the jb to the custom. I play a Samick Les Paul style guitar through a Fender Prosonic 2*10 combo. I've got a jb in my bridge and a '59 in the neck, but will soon replace the jb with an antiquity.

Custom (I haven't tried the JB though, this was just from recommendations and the clips)
I play blues to metallica/pantera with rock and heavy metal (eg Sabbath) in between with it.

hey,I noticed you mentioned the bbq.......which I have,but I can't seem to bring out the pickup's potential..........however,I'm only playing through a marshall combo amp,you think a tubescreamer would help?

Want a little more lows and low mids? You just described the Rio Grande BBQ.

BTR i agree i have tried this and it is very good indeed as a matter of fact the duncan bridge pup in the newer ibanez SZ 520's has a DD with the smaller ceramic and hex poles on the stud coil
that pup really smokes seriously it is like you said more refined than the mighty DD but still hot enough
all ya gotta do to make it a regular DD is put the larger ceramic in it and it gets even more smokin and the hex poles on the one coil tighten it up and give it more attack!:burnout:

Custom gets my vote overall, but I LOVE the JB on a Mahogany body.

Custom- in my Ibanez RG321 (mahogany)

JB- In my Ibanez RGA121 (mahogany)

both guitars handle my black metal/ fusion tonal requirements. i prefer the JB for its clarity.

I didn't vote because I haven't used the custom-
But I can give the JB a big thumbs up- Awesome split, tight detailed bass and covers all styles well- It's in a maple nightfly so it's a tad brite, but then again it is maple and nothing that a slight tone reduction can't fix-

Haven't tried the custom, but the custom5 in my les paul was really thin and weak. the JB sounds really good though.

Although, the custom5 sounds good in my dean hardtail, and the jb did not have enough bass.

I voted JB, but it really depends on guitar.

I guess 1 of each coil is needed and then decide which magnet to use.

From the Seymour Duncan soundclips, the JB sounds thicker than the Custom to me... :eek13:

The mids, I guess. Go figure.

Also, the JB sounds more open while the Custom sounds more compressed and dark. I think I'd prefer the JB better...

Custom does it for me.For those with a JB a Custom has deeper AND tighter bottom end,same amount of mids but focused in a lower frequency and better high frequency extension.JB splits alittle better than custom.Both can sound irritating in an already bright guitar.Which is better largely depends on your axe.These two are about the same output.I wish both of them were 20 percent lower output.Then maybe they would be 2 of the very best pickups in guitar history(OOPS!They already are!):smack:
