i just replaced a jb with a custom with great results....the jb was kinda thin..but the custom really filled out my sound...i use a jackson usa warrior wr1..and a randall cyclone stack with a boss metalzone as an overdrive..i play black/death doom/thrash...if you would like to check out my band www.goatwhore.net

Don't tell me this is you Sammy.I'm expecting a JB through atrade but I'llneed something with more balls for high gain so maybe I should look into the custom.
Here is a picture from last year in Oklahoma City.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

I just put a JB in the bridge of my Les Paul. I am getting some really nice big sounds from it. Very well rounded with an extra mid bite. It appears to be a great match for a Les Paul. Cannot decide what to go with in the neck however. Would like to try a PG as it seems a really popular choice for Les paul neck pickup on this forum. Don't think I have ever heard of anyone on the forum using this pickup combo (PG/JB.) Can't imagine it would be a bad thing.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

CUSTOM. I've had both in my Korina Les Paul, and the JB was good for metal, but not much else for me. In my guitar, the JB seemed to have a tighter bottom end.

I'd like to find a pickup like the Custom, but with a tighter bottom end and a little less mids. It could have a little less output also.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

One thing I have learned at Aron's stompbox forum, is that when running thru heavy distortion, a pickup with big bass can make it sound more harsh and flabby. I think that is one reason the JB has been so successful, is that the reduced bass does well with lots of distortion. Same with the Full Shred. The EQ of these pickups works well for a smooth tight sounding distortion. The CC also has reduced bass, but really sweet highs. The DC can sound realy PAFish sometimes, with lots of distortion.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

I voted JB cause it`s the only pickup that sounded right in my old bastardized 57 LP Jr. I like CC`s in everything else. I play mostly Classic and newer rock.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

I like them both...but I like the Custom better than the JB.

The JB I always like at first and then get tired of after a few days and I have never gotten tired of the Custom.

The Custom seems to have the best qualities of all of my favorite bridge humbuckers all rolled into one pickup.

How do you define warm? JB is a very thin sounding pup IMO Very shy of lows. It does have a good mid spike, but definately not warmer and rounder.

The JB is not a thin sounding pickup. Not in any way could it be considered thin. Sorry...but it's just not.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

I would probably say the Custom because you can do Magnet swaps and get soooo many other sounds. I prefer the EQ a bit, but I have never been huge on Ceramics.

Re: Jb Versus Custom

In retrospect, musical tastes and equipment change. When the JB first came out, high gain amps were not around yet and big mids were the tone of choice thru the '80's. The CC has even more mids.

Now "scooped" mids are prevalent and the DC works well for that.

With high gain amps readily available and plenty of stompboxes, vintage pickups work well because the pickup doesn't have to generate as much voltage for massive distortion.
