JB versus Custom

Re: JB versus Custom

i can't put the custom in the neck, its a SSH config. Besides i got a lil 59 for the neck already. left only money for another one.

how about something else like the pearly gates? does it match the high output of a lil 59? i dunno man.....its a tough choice.

i m looking for tone that's similar to the rhythm tone in slash's snakepit's 2nd album, Aint Life Grand. i aint using my bridge for lead now that i have a lil 59 for the neck.

I was going to suggest the Pearly Gates. I have one but I've never been able to compare it to a Custom or JB. My PG is in the bridge of my Washburn N4 and it's very warm and crunchy but a little 'thin' compared the sound of the Les Paul custom that my lead guitarist plays. This might be down to the N4 though, its a small guitar, made of Alder, as very little Mass and a Kahler Floyd. Mind you, it doesn't stop Nuno Bettencourt getting a HUGE sound out of his.

Jocelyn, I think a big difference is the fact that he already said that his guitar is bright. You played a FlyingV clone. Chances are, it had a darker sounding wood.

I think the recommendations for the Custom are the best. IMHO.

Yes agreed, the only thing I was trying to say is that I thought my V was BRIGHT, ansd was thinking of a 59, but took the chance with JB, and yes I would say it is a brighter humbuker, with that midrange spike but it has made my axe sound soo good I dont feel like picking up my strat even for playing chords...Yes the wood could be dark too...But I honestlydontknow what wood it is made of...
Hey Mr X ...I guess Pearly Gates would work fine too, or a custom custom...

Re: JB versus Custom

I really don't like playing leads on the JB. To me, the tone is much too thin on the high strings. In contrast, the Custom has a much thicker lead and rhythm tone, yet still has plenty of harmonic content.

Re: JB versus Custom

I throw in another aspect. I had a JB in the same guitar which is with a custom now. I didnt like the clean humbucker tone of the jb, the lead was great though. The Custom has both great clean almost vintage like and a screaming leads. But i lost my great parallel split sound, which is almost strat like with the JB.

If you are worried about the JB being bright, the Pearly Gates will not be a good pickup for you. It is fairly bright also!
