JB vs. 35th Anniversary JB vs. Antiquity JB comparison video suggestions?

We're going to do a three way comparison between the different JB models and I wanted to get some of your input on the structure and content of the video.

I have mapped out a rudimentary plan of attack but wanted to run this by y'all in the case that anyone has some good ideas.

Ideas on riff selection, tone and settings, actual video length etc. will be greatly appreciated.

Like I said, I have a plan of attack but just wanted to see what ideas (if any) are out there since there's no reason why this can't be collaborative effort.

Thanks in advance guys.

i like when the EQ on the amp is dimed, the volume and tone on the guitar are dimed. that way i can hear the "untamed/unaltered" tones. clean, crunchy and dirty channels would also help. also try to see how easy the natural harmonics are to obtain.

if you could do a run with a 250K pot and a 500K pot that would be great too.

Pickups through a clean amp, a dirty amp and a high gain amp.

Rhythm and Lead playing.

Best of luck,

Something similar to how Duncan has their sound bytes done would be great. Clean Bridge, Dirty Bridge, Clean Neck, Dirty Neck. For clean make sure to let notes ring out over each other so we can see how they sustain and handle note separation. For dirty see how palm muting and harmonics work with each. Thanks for this too! This is gonna be cool.

Re: JB vs. 35th Anniversary JB vs. Antiquity JB comparison video suggestions?

yeah exactly, same riffs and licks for each pickup.

Re: JB vs. 35th Anniversary JB vs. Antiquity JB comparison video suggestions?

Please do all this stuff with the pickups ALL in the SAME GUITAR.
Don't do the comparison with different pickups in different guitars.
Thanks & Peace

Little to no talking is preferred. High gain first.

Is this an SD sanctioned video or just something you're doing on your own? If its SD, have them send you 2 production JB's and record them both. This way, if someone claims to hear the ultra slight difference between two of the same production models, then the test will reveal how much more different the 35th and Ants are. In other words you want to avoid pages of analysis about the differences, if it turns out they are no more different than the slight variations between two production pickups, or two different playing performances.

Match pickup height, pole piece height and stagger, try to make sure one isn't tilted more, favoring screw vs slug coil.

Mono is best. No stereo image, and no reverb or effects. Low to medium gain will highlight any output differences due to the magnets.

With a fairly dirty amp, roll the volume back and try to get a warm classic-rock tone -- try to make it sound like a PAF through a Plexi or something like that. If there were anything I'd change about the JB in my favorite guitar, I'd make it a little easier to do that with it.

As much as I love gain I think that gobs of gain could cover the differences considering that we are talking about a lot of digital equipment (love it or hated it), being compressed, and then blasted through crappy computer speakers.

Everybody hit the high points I think. Oh, and keep it as dry as possible like the SD clips.

Real Amps! no pod or software.
use JCM800 2203/2204 or JMP MV for the dirty sound,
and a Deluxe or a Twin for the clean.

Include real gig scenarios. Demos should include a drummer who's too loud, a singer who shows up late, and preferably something under water. And a before/after sample of a beer spill.

I want to go on record saying that IMHO this is a terrible idea but I have to ask...

If this is actually is going to happen why not use an old JB too since that's sort of what stirred this all up in the first place??

Re: JB vs. 35th Anniversary JB vs. Antiquity JB comparison video suggestions?

2 Clean settings plus at least 3 gain settings from mild breakup to classic rock to high gain, with 3 different eq settings from high mids to neutral to metal scooped, all in the same guitar mic'd the same way with *no effects* or backing track, and playing EXACTLY the same material back to back on each pickup. All through amps that people are familiar with, please don't use *boutique brand_04" that only 2% of the people would be familiar with. That would be meaningful. Most comparisons are not.

Re: JB vs. 35th Anniversary JB vs. Antiquity JB comparison video suggestions?

I'd demo them split too- lots of people use the JB in HSS guitars and split it with the middle pickup.

Re: JB vs. 35th Anniversary JB vs. Antiquity JB comparison video suggestions?

Here is how I'd recommend it:

Start with clean, all three, 250K AND 500K.

Then mid gain, all three, 250K AND 500K

And last high gain, all three, 250K and 500K

For EQ, start with all knobs at 5 o'clock, gain variable with type of sound. Then for each pickup, follow the B/M/T curve provided on the Tone Chart, and then do a general inverse of that curve. Example: Standard JB - 5/5/5, 5/6/8, ~5/4/2. I find this to show the natural frequencies in the guitar/pickup combo. Still with all three pickups, with 250K AND 500K pots obviously.

Do both rhythm and lead work. For clean I'd say play some early rock and roll or classic rock etc. Mid-gain I'd say some blues and other classic rock stuff. Then for high gain some heavy metal and thrash metal (a lot of thrashers use(d) a JB, there is old school Metallica and Megadeth for example).

Leave stuff for splits, series/parallel, guitar volume clean up etc. for the end.

I can speak easily for the metal stuff, like play some Alice in Chains, Kill 'Em All-era-Metallica, Randy Rhoads era Ozzy stuff etc.

Re: JB vs. 35th Anniversary JB vs. Antiquity JB comparison video suggestions?

Great suggestions guys.

I have been doing tests and have come up with what I can do and what I can't.

1). Since I am going to be using the same guitar (my #1), I will just have to go with the pots that are already installed in the guitar. 500K tone and volume.

2). I want to stick to comparing only 3 pickups to keep it from getting too confusing and difficult to pull off properly.

3). I will only be using one amp (my #1) and it is a 1966 Fender Princeton Reverb (my Super Reverb needs to go to the repair man to troubleshoot a couple of small issues and my Bandmaster has a 1x15 cabinet and I don't want to use that large of a speaker for this test). I don't really own any other amps so we'll just have to go with what I've got.

4). Switching from a dirty to a clean tone means that I will have to change settings and knobs on the amp... I'll have to set and reset the amplifier after every pickup swap and that will lead to small differences in tone that will destroy the integrity of the test. So... if I do a clean sample it will have to be with a different amp... I do have Polytone but will probably have to do a modeled tone for the clean amps since I don't want to have to move the microphones since that too will cause small changes in tone that will skew the results of the comparison.

5). I will be using a Weehbo JMP Drive to be getting my gain from and it is not a high gain pedal at all... when I dime the gain, it is still only medium gain. So, I'll be doing medium gain most of the time but I will back it off to lower gain for a portion of the test.

6). I've chosen the riffs I will play according to A). What I can play exactly the same every time
B). If the riffs were actually recorded with a JB (I'm only doing 1 or 2 that weren't recorded with a JB)
C). Stuff I'm familiar with and would enjoy playing

7). No high gain, but the medium gain stuff will be played with force and power... you won't miss the extra gain.

8). I won't talk and will communicate through text... I might not even show me playing much (or at all) 'cause I shot a whole bunch of pickup porn last week and wanna use it.

Stay tuned folks.
