jb vs. custom custom

Re: jb vs. custom custom

The biggest difference is the upper mid spike of the JB that causes it to often seem bright in the right (or is it wrong? :D) guitar. On the custom custom that spike moves more toward the low mids and, to me, the spike doesn't seem quite as strong.

Re: jb vs. custom custom

the sh5 is really excellent fir a gibson.
i use it on my les paul (i think that my sg is perfect with gibson 498t) and ther is a perfect balance betxeen b/m/t

Re: jb vs. custom custom

i thought the custom custom was voiced brighter than the jb?

also, i don't necessarily mind the stock pickups in the sg, but i'm looking for something with a bit more output...not full on modern, but a little step closer to it...it seems like everyone recommends the custom custom to me.

Re: jb vs. custom custom

The custon still had the highs of the jb but the shift in the mids made most notes sound creamier and thicker. So it sounded warmer on most notes but solos would cut. I used both in Ash, Alder, and Mohogany. The custom custom sounded great to me in ash and alder. I liked the JB best in all 3 for what I play. The CC in ash was a nice Eddie Van Halen tone

Re: jb vs. custom custom

The CC is far from being brighter than the JB. Now, if you wire the JB to a 250K pot, then those high mids are gone. But it has been said by Lew that the CC then has some more highs than the JB when using a 250K pot with the JB. When both are wired to 500K, the JB will always be brighter.

For what you're wanting and described, go with the CC. It's a great pickup all around and covers many bases. I've always said that it's a medium output pickup even though it is rated as high. And it has those nice rolled off highs and buttery mids. "Syrupy" and "Creamy" are two words to describe it.

Re: jb vs. custom custom

Mmmm...creamy...I'm getting the CC installed next week with an A2P, I'm psyched. Must...have...mids!!! JB had so many highs that I couldn't stand to be in the same room with it....

Re: jb vs. custom custom

THe CC has a more PAF-like vibe than the JB. Has good output, a big step up from a PAF. As for modern sounding, I dunno, the JB is more 80s, the CC is almost a souped-up 60's sound. Or a bluesy vibe. Crank it and you get some great harmonics and smooth overdrive, and very tuneful, but it's not a real modern sound. Not like a Tone Zone, which is tighter and more flat in eq.

well, it seems like the custom custom is a better place to start. now for the neck i'm going with a '59. any better suggestions?

Pearly Gates neck, Alnico II Pro neck or Jazz neck. Heck, the Jazz bridge is turning out to be quite a good neck pickup.

I've got a Jazz neck in my LP and love it. It was paired up with a Custom Custom before I swapped bridge the bridge pickup. The CC went in another guitar. If I had to choose again, I would go with the Pearly Gates.

Re: jb vs. custom custom

for anyone who's used both, can anyone tell me if the custom custom and the '59 will give me a bit more clarity than the stock gibsons (490R and 498T...i THINK those are the right numbers)?

Re: jb vs. custom custom

I have used both pickups in my Ibanez AX320 (mahognay, set neck, 24.75") and both are good, but the Custom Custom really shines. The mids are powerfull giving it a thicker sound than the JB. But on the other side it's not as cutting as the JB. I can't really compare it to the Gibsons as I have never used them for very long.

Re: jb vs. custom custom

I support the CC - or if possible a Custom with a A3 (a bit more bass). In the neck i felt the 59N to have a booming low end. I would go with a A2 humbucker.

Re: jb vs. custom custom

Had the CC/59 combo for a day before deciding to swap out the neck. '59 seemed somehow cold in comparison; I've got a PGn on order.

Re: jb vs. custom custom

With my aforementioned Ibanez I'm using an APH-1n in the neck. I had the JB/59 combo for a while but I have to say that I allways felt that the neck lacked "character". It seemed dry and boring. The APH-1 can get a little muddy under heavy distortion but has a sweet, singing quality with the right amount of character (as long as you keep the gain out of the extreem zone). I think that the '59 makes an excellent bridge pickup, but I've not been as happy with it in the neck.

Another guitar of mine has a Dimarzio Virtual PAF Neck in it and I have been very pleased with it. Normally I'm not a big Dimarzio fan, but with this one they seem to have hit upon something. It has a sweet midrange quality like the APH-1 but doesn't have as much "mud".
