JB VS Custom?

Re: JB VS Custom?

good analogy!! Cant wait to run my Jb thru my splawn!!

My main rig for a few years was a 3 gear Quickrod, my LP Custom with a JB/59 set and Greenbacks or G12H-30s. KILLER tones. Could play anything from blues-rock to metal. Don't let anyone tell you that the QR is just for VH-style or hair metal, like many seem to label it as.

If you like to tinker with tubes and junk, those amps really respond well to different tube brands/types/etc. I forget what resistor it was (R31 IIRC) you could add a toggle and a resistor in parallel to the existing one and easily switch between EL34s and 6L6s/6550s. I miss that amp quite a bit. My next amp project will be a mix of Recto/Splawn/SLO tones. :)

Re: JB VS Custom?

The Custom has more of a '59/Screaming Demon tone to it. Just like cars and women, you need one of each. ;)

I used to switch out the JB in my ibanez ar300 for a custom. The custom has tighter low end, and emphasize the lower midrange. The JB has bigger, looser bass, and emphasize the lows and the upper midrange, which makes it very heavy sounding for metal rhytms, even when tuned to e standard. They both are great for lead playing.

Yeah, I love my quickrod!! I find it more flexible than it gets pigeonholed into. I even think the clean isn't bad. Not fenderish mind you, but a lot of folks talk about them like the have no clean ability.

Re: JB VS Custom?

Mine had the 3 preamp tubes, and I could get GREAT cleans with my JB. They weren't PERFECT like you say, but if you lighten up on the picking, you could get some nice sparkly cleans. Maybe it's just me, but I think the JB is more dynamic than people give it credit for. If you really pound on it, harmonics come screaming out, but with control. If you're nice and ginger with it, it will sing and purr for you. I used to use tung-sol reissue preamp tubes, which may help too. They tended to give cleans a little more sparkle.

Re: JB VS Custom?

All this JB talk is making want to put one back in my LP.

My BBs aren't going anywhere, but that's exactly what I'd want a second Les Paul to sound like.

Re: JB VS Custom?

JB = hot rodded marshall
Custom = mesa recto

Wow... your analogy just cleared A LOT of indecision in my head. I was considering getting either an Alternative 8 or a Custom in the bridge of my Les Paul paired with PG in the neck. From what I can tell, the Alternative 8 is like the JB on 'roids, with slightly more low end with a bit more clarity. Right? Some of the best tones I've heard off records/live settings have been via a JB. But for some reason, I find it difficult to control the JB... perhaps because I'm using budget amplifiers. Anyhow, if my assumed comparison b/w the Alt8 and JB are true, than I have found the pups I want... a Custom/PGn combo!

Edit: oh man... i just realized that this thread is a year and a half old. I was just using Google search for information and didn't even consider the date of the thread. My apologies for the grave digging, guys!

Have many JBs and a few Alt-8s. Never heard the thing where some people suggest the Alt-8 has all these lows. It is high output and a little clear and it likes to sing and sustain. Now the JB8 is heavier on the lows. If you are buying new you can use the exchange policy if you don't like the tone of your choice. If you are going with a pre-owned you can typically find a home for any one of those without much fuss. So either way you can check out a few and see what works best for your rig.

Re: JB VS Custom?

I don't have any experience with the JB or Custom, but I have to say since I put an UOA5 in the 59/C Hybrid in my alder Strat with a OFR, I am lovin it. Any comparisons of it to the other two? Were you been Ed Hunter? Haven't seen you on here in a while.

Re: JB VS Custom?

I just read your last post Niloy63, and got a good laugh! But seriously, if anyone has a comparison between those three it would be cool to hear.

Re: JB VS Custom?

JEC, Ed's still not around..That was an old post. Wonder why? Tell you tho. Ive been undecided about what to put in my LP, I really liked those clips, but loved the growliness of the custom!

Re: JB VS Custom?

Ya they both sound GOOD! Similar in ways, but different. Could be a hard choice even if you A/B them in your own guitar and adjusted your amp for each PU to get the best out of each.
