JB w Alnico 2 mag?

I just got a new ibanzez and will likely change the pups out. I have tried a JB in my bluesbird and it sounded cool but i think a stock JB would be too bright as this guitar is rather bright sounding. A little more than my strat believe it or not. Has anyone done this mod? what does it sound like? would it sound good through a recto? Also is it hard to do?

Re: JB w Alnico 2 mag?

I think there is a guy at this forum who raved about a JB with a A2. i aways thought that the JB (and also the Custom5) have a big bump where the low mids should be. This give the feeling of emptiness to me while i hear bass and highs, but nothing else. A2 could fill this by cutting highs and lows though a A3 has a little more bass to me.
I now run my JB with a A8 mag, which is boosting the mids while not touching bass and highs in comparison to the standart A5.
Give the A2 a try! BTW Seymour Duncan said that the first version of the JB had a A2, too.

If you know how to swap magnets, there's sure no harm in trying. I think A2 would help it a lot for what you're looking for, and if that doesn't work, try A4.

Re: JB w Alnico 2 mag?

I swapped the A-2 out of a CC & put it in the JB in my Hamer. I love the h#ll out of it. The Hamer is solid mahogany, which is warm to begin with. The JB/A2 really brings this out. It's still very articulate and plenty of output. Give it a shot.

what does the Alnico 2 do to the midrange and the high end? I don't want it to be too dark but i want something that would sound warm yet with clarity. Not shrill, not muddy.

i wrote 'cutting highs' is not the right word. For me its not so shrill bcause the initial attack is softer, so you feel the highs not so dominant.

It would be a much smoother overall tone -- less bite and grind and a touch less bottom, but fuller mids, relatively speaking. I say relatively because there would be some loss of output going from Alnico 5 to Alnico 2.

The JB has more than enough top as is that it wouldn't become muddy with A2 though.
