JB with an Alnico 4 - Anybody?

The JB2 thread got me thinking. I have a few guitars with Lindy Fralin pickups, which all use the alnico 4 magnets. I wonder, would a JB have tight bass, gutsy mids and a smoother, less ice-pickey top end, if it used an alnico 4 magnet?

I just did a magnet swap in another pickup, and I'm pleased with the results. I want to try it again. I've heard of people using the alnico 8 as well as the 2 in a JB, but never heard of the 4 being done.

If you have tried it, what was your opinion? Thanks.

I think the A2 accomplishes what you described but try the A4. It's only a few bucks so why not right?

AlNiCo 8 is like an AlNiCo 2 just 'cranked up' lmao. It does have a tighter bass though... but my findings is in most cases it is 'too much'... only exception I like is my WCR Ironman.

I think it'll sound good in the same guitar it sounded ice-picky with the original magnet without losing any of its "personality".

I think Alnico 8 actually solves a lot of the problems of Alnico 5. That said, Alnico 4 will make you work a little harder physically to get the same punch as the aforementioned.

If you like the "clean" quality of the A5 JB, but want a tad more warmth, A8 should please thee.

a8 works better in high output pickups.

I but an a8 in my 59b a while ago and it's safe to say I'll never do that again.

but for like 5 or 6 bucks, you should try both and give an opinion. if you don't like one, you can find another use for it later or trade it to someone or stick it on the fridge or something.
