JB with Big Ceramic mag =?

Hi all.

What exactly is the JB with a large ceramic mag?


I installed such a mag in a zebra JB last night and installed that pickup in my Hamer. I replaced the C5 that was previously there because of a lack of mids.


This thing romps!!

Way hotter than the C5 and Custom, and more balanced than the JB. It got rid of the annoying honk that a JB has and gave it back the bottom end. It's great for chunky riffs and really screams on leads. I'm liking this pickup a lot now.

I have band practice tonight, so I'll see how it does at full volume in a band setting.

If the cleans don't suffer too much, I might not even look at the BBq anymore. :beerchug:

Sounds like a Distortion to me. But with the large ceramic, maybe a Distortion+. Wait, that's an MXR pedal...hmmmm. Need a name here.

The ceramic mag is huge on this thing. I took it out of an old Yamaha pickup from my AES 500. I actually had to make shims for the coils so that the mag would fit properly under them.

Last night on my Radioshack Digital multimeter (about 65 degrees F) it put down 15.7k.

Not bad. Not quite as high as the JB or Distortion but almost there, in the ballpark anyway.

I know. I thought the lower temp caused the fluctuation in DC readings. Am I right, or do I just have an underwound JB?


BTW, In the summer I've gotten readings as high as 16.2 from this same pickup (Avg temp 90 degrees F).

That's bizarre. Of course, mother nature does affect things more than we know. It could be just the difference in temp.

Erik, Resistances on pickups do vary a bit from model to model. Temp. changes the resistance also. I have seen JB's as high as 17.3K so, I am sure the can be as low as the low 16's or even high 15's also. I think the resistance in the specs is usually more of an average.

Cool, thanks for chiming in. With JB in the title I knew you'd check it out...LOL LOL LOL.

I knew there would be a difference between 2 of the same pickups, just didn't think it would be that much of a difference. When I was checking out some 59's, they were all above 8k, but no higher than 8.5k. Of course, they were all in the same room so the temp was the same and that would explain why they were so close based on what you said.

I still want to know how my Fender stock single coils can sound decent at 2.8k. That's way way low.

How does the Ceramic affect the bass? any nice bottom end now? does it keep the top as nice and bite-y?

I still want to know how my Fender stock single coils can sound decent at 2.8k. That's way way low.

And unusual. Normal strat coils run in the 6k range.

A JB with a ceramic is a Distortion, surprised noone mentioned that yet.

The Duncan Distortion has a larger than normal ceramic magnet compared to the ceramic from a Duncan Custom.

Not sure if the Yamaha ceramic is larger than the DD but it is still basically a Duncan Distortion now maybe a little hotter or cooler.

I have a JB I added the ceramic magnet from a Custom and it is similar to a Duncan Distortion, but not quite as hot, but it does give the same basic tone. More like a DD than a JB.

Lots more bass and tight too. The highs are sharper, but not that harsh..

Aside from the JB with a large ceramic mag being the Distortion, I believe JB From Hell gets his name from that very same pickup
