JB with more cojones?

Is there a JB type pickup in the SD family with JB tone characteristics, but with more balls (tighter crunch, thickness)? I like some of the JB’s aspects, but it just sounds very brittle and kind of weak, in a way.



I have a Schecter C1-Plus (mahogany bodied) and it’s not very bright, nor dark. It’s kind of in between a Strat and Paul. More along the lines of a PRS – great guitar for the money.

I don’t want anything too crazy, like the Invader. I think I’m looking for something in between a JB and Invader. I play metal mostly, but dabble in everything else (shred, fusion), so I to retain some versatility.



Are there any pickups that are like this?



If not, what else is there?

a ceramic JB is also known as a distortion lite, or JB+ ad the distortion and JB share the same coils, but the distortion has an extra thick ceramic magnet as opposed to a standard sized alnico 5 in a JB. the invader bridge also has the same coils, but with the large screw pole pieces instead of standard screws/slugs, and with three ceramic magnets, one in the center and two in the sides, commonly refered to as "spacer magnets."

Speaking of the JB, I just realized that I have one in a guitar with a basswood body!:lmao: I did it years ago, and it's the weirdest-sounding guitar I've ever owned. The neck is a Jazz. :doh: You know what the really good part is? It's a seven-string. :chairfall Kids, this is going to be fun.

I have to recommend the Distortion. It's like a stronger, tighter JB. I think it might be a JB for metal riffage. I think the ceramic in the JB will get you close, though, so you can be in the ballpark for less than 10 bucks. I happen to like the JB8 better than the Distortion, so you might want to pick up an Alnico 8 and a Ceramic.

By the way, if you're not familiar with magnet swapping, don't be scared. There are lots of tones in them and lots of help here. I think the only way to change your tone cheaper (and less drastically, I might add) would be to change picks.

Where could I buy a ceramic magnet and are there different types of ceramic magnets? I actually kinda know how to do the swap and I once practiced on a cheap pickup. Seemed easy enough. I just need to know which end goes up.

Screw swapping magnets and all that bollocks with the JB. You want a Duncan Distortion.

Yep. As much as I like the JB in my Jacksons, I think the Duncan Distortion is what you're looking for. I used to have one, and it fits your description of what you want.

There's an old saying about letting people think you're an idiot until you open your mouth and prove it. Local legend has it the only difference between the JB and the Distortion is the magnet.

What about this extra-large ceramic magnet that the Distortion is supposed to have? Can you buy that from Wymore?
