JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

Re: JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

sometimes destroy erase improve beats fine tuning

Um...can you rephrase that? lol

Interesting observation...I don't hear the Character being lost with the sponginess but we all hear/perceive things differently

Re: JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

I mean sometimes fine tuning doesn't do and it's better to start over. I mean swapping the thing with something different.

Re: JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

B lost the sponginess but with it went the character, and it just became flat. Some things are better left alone, sometimes destroy erase improve beats fine tuning. IMHO.
I can see what you mean, and I partially agree! I'm liking the tightness and extra clarity, but like you said, it did lose a bit of character. (but to my ears not all that much)
I'm not sure wether to keep it this way or not, since both ways have their pros and cons haha!

Re: JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

More probably, the thought I tried to articulate, became gibberish. Input output error. Hope you had a good laugh.

Now, back on the topic, when picking tones, I'm trying to not get get stuck in maybes and don't knows. It's better to make a decision than let the decision make itself.

Re: JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

Alright, after playing with it some more, I definitely like it more over the stock fillisters. It just tracks tighter and sounds clearer. But most of the change is in the ''feel'' of the pickup imo.

This is correct the tonal changes are very subtle

I definitely meant no offense by any means!

I just re-read something I posted from my phone last night and realized I misspelled and left out words in my train of thought.

Awesome to hear man!

+1 To this

Re: JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

Cool playing! It's nice that you posted a clip. I can hear a difference. Second half of the clip sounded a bit tighter and more attacky.

So what kind of hex screws are these? Anyone know if I can just grab some hex screws off a PAF Pro and slap them in the JB? Will they fit?

They are from AddictionFX. As far as the PAF Pro I do not know for sure...thinking yes but not 100% positive. I'll check and see how many I have left over–planning on doing this mod on an incoming guitar but if I have extra leftover then I can send ya some.

My mind is failing me at the moment and i cant remember. Dimarzio uses 2 types... ones are short fat set screw type, those wont fit. If they have a head and a smaller shaft then yes they do fit.

I want to say Super D screws wont fit but Paf Pro screws will. I know breed screws will. If you can see them visually its easy to check

Re: JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

Ah! Breed has the same type screws as the PAF Pro. Thank you. I might try it. :)

I don't think that's going to be necessary. I have a PAF Pro and a Dominion that I also want to try the standard fillisters in, so it's kind of a win/win here, lol. Thanks a bunch, though. :)

Most welcome man! They were dirt cheap at AFX and the shipping was the same when I doubled my order so I just got a bunch.

Re: JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

Try an A9. Even hotter than A8 but it has more bite and grind that may balance the bottom a bit better.

Re: JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

Grabbed the screws off a DiMarzio. They fit. They weren't much shorter, but they were shorter. Sounds cool! It's cool because the difference is somewhat slight. The JB still sounds like a JB (mine is still running the plain old Alnico 5 magnet), just with a tiny bit more attack, and a bit less stuffy low mids. Sounds a bit thinner, but I think that's ok since I'm tuning relatively low with relatively thick strings.

Looks cool too! Kinda like "what the hell kinda pickup is that?!", lol.

That's awesome! And good to know that the pole pieces are interchangeable!

Re: JB8 Pole Piece Modifications

Yeah, man! I'm hoping the longer fillisters that came off the JB tame the chirpy attack of a PAF Pro a bit. :)
