JCA100 clip - full band mix!

CTN

The Drama Dude
This is a demo of an old song that my Joke band's been working on and decided to re-record.

It's supposed to be black metal, but it ends up more melodic than anything. It's not complete yet. I want to get my singer to redo the vocals, and I need to tweak the drum sound a bit, but other than that the guitars and bass are right where i want them to be. Mind you, normally, I go for a thick, girthy rhythm tone, but since this is black metal, I opted for a somewhat thinner, more mid/treble focused one. I think it came out nicely.

Gear list:

Guitar: my homebrew blue bastard (PAF Pro bridge for all rhythms + leads)
Pedalboard: Boss NS2, Boss GE7, Dunlop Crybaby (custom sweep), Ibz TS9
Bass: Ibanez Soundgear with stock pups
Mic (for vox): e835
Drums: EZdrummer DFH
Amp: Jet City JCA100H
DAW: Reaper
Processing: LePoulin LeCab 2, Reaper Reverb, Delay, EQ and Compression plugins

At times, I'd call it "Blackened Power Metal"

Re: JCA100 clip - full band mix!

I've got to be honest. I'm upset. I was hoping for something sooooo much more. Nothing against the music or anything, but I was really wanting to hear the amp man. I gave up after about 40 seconds or so.

Re: JCA100 clip - full band mix!

like i said, I haven't finished mixing it. I have been feeling like the guitars could sound a bit more in your face though.

Re: JCA100 clip - full band mix!

The music kinda reminds me of early Inflames or other Swedish metal bands. cool stuff. loved those dudes. I'm not exactly sure how you're recording the guitars but yeah the guitars should stand out more. your bass is too much in the mix, at least try keeping the bass centered and one guitar panned left and your other panned right. cleans up the mix a bit. I'm in the middle of mixing some of my bands songs right now and I know how hard it is but good job man I hear the guitar. If you don't mind here's a link to the songs i did so far. We don't have a bass(player) yet, we're demoing some guys next week. But this is what i meant about panning left and right. I recorded everything in the left first and the in the right. Here's a couple links, like i said I too am still in the middle of mixing and recording

but real good playin man. i digg it

Re: JCA100 clip - full band mix!

Really can't hear anything in this - did you export a mono mix??

Bassist is rushing the beat a lot, and the singer is... horrible. :(

I already did that with the L+R guitars. I can't double track the guitars otherwise I would have (other guitarist is in another province at the moment).

not a mono mix (see above). The bassist was a session sit-in, who's a friend of ours. He had learned the song like...minutes before we recorded it.

The singer is... well... have you seen this?

Seriously though...goin to listen harder to the mix this time play with the EQ's a bit and see if I can get everything sitting better. Vocals are gonna get re-recorded, but they aren't gonna get much better ;)

that was different.

:friday:

Re: JCA100 clip - full band mix!

It would be better if you got Beavis being the Great Cornholio over it. Your singer kinda sounds like he's trying to do that anyways.

Re: JCA100 clip - full band mix!

i gotta check but pretty sure I panned the two rhythm tracks almost all the way L/R. leads in the center along with bass, and vox. drums were supposed to be stereo, dunno if that came through ok.

I lose a lot of the drums' sound quality and a lot of clarity in the mix when i mix the project down to an mp3 grrr...

Re: JCA100 clip - full band mix!

Don't pay any mind to my old drunken version of this post.

I'm not really 100% on your singer's growl but you guys are very tight.

This was cool!

However there is definitely something weird going on with your mix. I would defer to VK on the comments over that area.

It's not the mp3 compression that's toying with your mix, I promise you that.

If your guitars really are hard left/right, then did you just copy/paste one track twice?

That's was going to be my next guess. They really should be recorded twice with different guitars, one panned left and another panned right. cant really do it with the same track just duplicated.

Re: JCA100 clip - full band mix!

no, it's two different guitar tracks for rhythm. L is me, R is other guitarist although, she's not as good as me and doesn't really practice...ever...

so it's a miracle it came out as "together" sounding as it did.

I'll do a hard pan L + R tonight and see how it sounds.

Re: JCA100 clip - full band mix!

Yeah I'm not too familiar with the reaper software, only thing I use is Cubase free version. I usually do a hard pan l/r on my rhythm guitars and bass centered. How are you recording the guitars?
