I've just done testing a high gain mod on a 1982 50w Marshall JCM800. I happen to like the way it turned out and thought I'd share my joy with you. Amp was hooked to a dummy load and recorded direct with impulse responses. Guitar plugged straight-in, one track per channel. No boost pedals or post processing. Enjoy!

jcm800 and plexys must be the most modded amps on earth. So what mod did you do?...kept the 3 stages or took out the cathode follower, etc etc

It really has the grind I love in Marshalls I wish I could hear it in a good room through a good cab! I bet it sounds grand!

Bought a Marshall Vintage Modern combo last summer, and it has a lot of the same things going for it, though obviously with more of a KT66 vibe. What's in your 2203? EL34s, KT88s or 6L6 tubes? (A lot of the high gain mods use the latter two.)

They sure are. They've got nice iron, simple circuits and lots of space inside - they beg to be modded. I don't do amps myself, I am too stupid for that and would certainly blow something up :D What I do is testing and assessment. I plug in a guitar and play the hell out of it. If there's an evil grin on my face, it's considered a winner; otherwise the amp gets tweaked further.

Cheers.

So do I. Haven't tried it through a cab which is bit of a pity. The amp's low end promises some sonic gut massage action.

The amp isn't mine. It runs a pair of EL34s. I think they tend to compress and breakup in a gradual manner, adding some roar as you crank it up. Sometimes a cleaner power section is preferred.

Not a big fan of people tricking out old Marshalls, but wanted to give ya some props on the chops! Nice job.
