I can't comment on it as a whole, but I can comment on the pups. The current Fender listing says it has "Fender Special Design dual-coil ceramic Noiseless™ pickups". I don't know if these are what was previously described as the "Hot Noiseless Pickups" (ceramic, and dual coil as that is where the "noiseless" comes from) or not. I've listened to a lot of demos, and of all the Fender pups, the Hot Noiseless are my pups of choice for a Fender Strat. Pure Strat sound and, well, noiseless (by comparison).

changed a little since the Beck strat I tried out in the early 90s. still has a roller nut. this new one seems like it's a little more direct in the approach, where as the older one had a few bells and whistles indicative of the time.

I remember that the necks were among the biggest I've ever used on a Strat. Uncomfortable for me, but it isn't my signature guitar. I loved the sound and look of the old one from the 90s. I am not sure how Jeff's stage guitars are modified, other than the trems certainly float!

yeah, that older Beck model did have a bit of a hog leg for a neck. can't say I have much interest in checking out the newer one. I only played that older one because I was looking at the Lace Senor pickups and it was loaded with them. LOL!

the new ones have a much more normal size neck, nothing crazy like the first ones. although, i loved the huge neck on that model. nice shape to it, just very thick

Yes, and even the more recent ones have overly thick necks for my taste. Slightly larger than modern Standard Strat necks. I guess I'm spoiled, but the thick neck was a deal breaker for me.....

Better play one in person before you order on the internetz. I came very close to buying one based on the features and looks alone, but the neck was too much.

Jeff plays those a lot better than I do. My little 12 year old girl hands can't get along with the neck.

the neck? it was like 1" all the way down but had a huge shoulder so more like a D shape rather than a C if i recall correctly

I LOVE those old Beck Strats. I almost bought one. Had a dually red lace sensor in the bridge and I want to say 2 blues (neck and middle) or a gold in the middle. Yeah, the neck was baseball bat for sure but with my big hands, it felt great. That's what made me go with the Warmoth Boatneck contour. I had played a Clapton Strat and dug the V shape but liked the fatness of the Beck so a buddy of mine said I should combine the two and go with that profile. It was a great idea.

I quite like the Beck Strat model.

As others have pointed out, the neck is just chunky or full-feeling now as opposed to baseball bat size. I find the neck extremely comfortable and only wish the 9.5" radius could be 12" like the Eric Johnson model.

The tuning stability is very good with the roller nut and locking tuners.

The pickups are good and very usable, not great. The Hot Noiseless pickups are ceramic and definitely have the associated pros and cons. You don't get the squish and organic feel of alnico, but you do get clarity and cut that holds up under high gain. Despite their name, the Hot Noiseless aren't all that hot - slightly hotter than vintage but nowhere near firebreathing.

The combination of all these features make this the off-the-shelf Strat I'm least likely likely to mod. Probably I would just block the trem, and that's it. Otherwise, the guitar is good to go out of the box - no dodgy nut material, no single coil hum, locking tuners come stock, nice thick neck. The price is also very reasonable compared to the other artist signature Strats.

My 2000 STD MiM Strat is my first guitar and among my best-sounding ones to boot.

however the *normal* C-shape neck is too freakin' thick for my hands and I cannot for the life of me play it for more than a few minutes before I start cramping up and down.

I don't think I could EVER handle a "real man's fat neck" unfortunately... :dunno:

Like the one on my les Paul traditional? I can't lie. It sucks.

Sometimes my hands don't want to play my Gibson anymore and I've noticed it may be because of the super fat neck

The rest of the time it's awesome!!


About the beck strat, it's the "high end" strat I've considered buying before. I considered it over my les Paul when I was shopping for that "big" soloist axe.

There are plenty of ways to demonstrate your manhood. Torturing yourself with a baseball bat neck isn't one of them. All that matters is the sounds that comes out when you play.

More power to those who like them.
