Re: Jeff Beck Strat?
I don't want to poo poo custom shop guitars, but I've had 2. They were great. A 57 style and a Robert Cray model. They use high quality components for sure. My favorite strat I ever had? A standard or maybe it was a deluxe, it had a rosewood board and the TBX tone control, and it cost me about 800 bucks in like 1993 or 94. that guitar was a real player. But in all 100% honesty, if you played 20 standard strats I bet you would find one you like almost as much or more as many CS fiddles. You plunk down 1000 bucks on a standard, then if you want different pickups, say 250 bucks there. A first rate setup for another 75 bucks and you'll have a pretty mean strat.
To make sure what I'm saying is understood, CS guitars are made with really great stuff. That doesn't mean that they are perfect. And they are also triple the price of a standard. The JB and the EJ both appeal to me as in between the standard and CS guitars. I would buy a CS strat, but I am deathly afraid of being unhappy with my purchase. That being said, my local shop has a couple CS strats, and who knows. They may slap one in my mitts and it may be love. Also, I must point out that I have not touched a CS guitar in almost 20 years. Maybe they are worth the extra money now. I must admit I love a seafoam green or daphne blue vintage looking style strat. I'll be buying something in a few weeks, so I may seek more advice from this well informed group.
