Jeff Beck

What regular single coil pickups can I put in my guitar to get some of those tones similar to the recordings off the Wired album?

Re: Jeff Beck

Thanks Rid!

Beck's 70's era Strat was nothing really special...just a nice Strat with 70's era pickups from what I understand.

As Rid said, SSL-1's would do the trick nicely.

Antiquity II Surfers would be similar but even better.

And Scott or Alex (I forget which), at Seymour Duncan, told me that when "Beck has tone...he's using Alnico II Pros".

So I guess Beck has used Alnico II Pros in his Strat from time to time too.

Beck's my favorite living guitarist, BTW.

I agree with what Lew said, but you also have to remember that most of Jeff Becks tone comes from his hands as only he can do. The guy is simply amazing. That being said, I like the Duncan Antiquitys in the neck and middle, and the SSL6 in the bridge.

Re: Jeff Beck

I am a HUGE Beck(Jeff that is) fan as well...
It should be noted that Jeff has had a relationship with Seymour for MANY years and that he most likely was using various pickups of Seymour's.
To my ears... some of the tones on Wired sound like an SSL-3 Hot Strat and the SSL-5 Custom Strat.
He used a Calibrated Set of Alnico Pro II's in his main Pale Yellow Strat after his brief stint with Jackson guitars... remember that Pink one with Tina Turner's autograph scrathed into the top! That strat was his main guitar and what the Fender Jeff Beck Signature Strat ws based off of.
His LIVE amp choice is usually Marshall or old Fender Tweeds... in the STUDIO I have read that he has a favorite old Fender Princeton Reverb and Twin Reverb that he uses a lot as well.
A key ingredient to Jeffs tone is the very early Big Box Rat pedal... the Reisuue does not sound the same... Lew... weren't you looking for one a while back? I remember sending you pictures of the innards of the 2 that I have... they are slightly different from each other as well!
oh yeah... if you had his hands that would help too!

LOL! The only way to sound like Jeff Beck is to BE Jeff Beck, IMO.

I did find a nice old Big Box Ratt, and you're right...they do sound differant than most Ratts. Smoother and easier to control and use.

But I still sound NOTHING like Jeff Beck when I use it.

With my gear and touch I actually get closer with a Boss DS-1...just because I feel more comfortable with the DS-1,
not because it's what he uses.

But obviously if Ratts came out in the 80's he wouldn't have been using one in the 60's and 70's.

When I saw him three nights in a row in 1967 (playing the tunes off of the TRUTH album) at the Grande Ballroom & Fifth Dimension (in Detroit and Ann Arbor, Michigan) he plugged his Les Paul into a Marshall Supa-Fuzz, and that's FOR SURE! I got right up to the stage and looked over his gear every night.

Hello Hello-
Yeah, the Marshall was his fuzz back then.......made by Sola Sound and basically a Tonebender MK II......great sounding fuzzes! [The Colorsound Overdrive came later.]

Re: Jeff Beck

Hello Hello-
Just remembered that in the mid-to-late '90's [maybe even now...] Beck would crank the treble on his amps very high and then use the tone control on his Strat to control the overall sound.
