Everything I read says Jeff basically goes strat>> wah >> DSL50

But, there are some very cool sounding weird noises on his latest self-titled CD. Listen to "Trouble Man". He get's this sound that sounds like a delay with no dry signal, it could also be him flicking the strat's 5-way toggle switch back and forth...maybe. Just trying to figure it out! Any thoughts?

Man, that dude plays some cool sounding stuff... A lot of it is damn hard to duplicate using a pick and I pretty much suck using my fingers.

Somewhere i read that Jeff has been using a POD in the studio these days and his Marshall rig is mostly for live work......

Do you have any cool guitar videos? I'll loan you my Jeff Beck/Jennifer Batten Live in Toronto 2001 VHS. I've looked closely, and it looks like Jeff uses the DSL with the clean channels on, but I don't know what he uses to overdrive it....maybe Vox Tonebenders?

Jeff does some stuff on that video that makes me sick with jealousy. He has a command over his volume control and whammy bar that is something to behold. PM me, if you want to swap something. You'll dig this video. I loaned it to Kevlar, and he thought the same thing.

on the last 3 records Jeff has been using the Strat/Wah/DSL 50 rig...the delay was added in the mix. There have been some scratch tracks that made the final cut as well, and most of those were recorded with a Line 6 Flextone II. As for live work, Jeff has said that he just runs the clean channel on the DSL and cranks it for crunch

+1 , I`ve got a few Jeff Beck DvDs and it is amamzing how this guys works the guitar. He puts every finger to work on the trem , vol. , tone knobs. The guy is simply amazing and to quote Steve Vai from a 2001 Guitar Player mag "Jeff Beck is one of those rare players that gets better as he gets older"!

I have not seen the Toronto 2001 dvd yet either.... I only have the Japan 1999 dvd.... It was a tv broadcast

Greetings & good day.
When I was a kid, I was super into punk, hardcore, etc. As I got older, it matured into "emo" or "Indie" (or whatever you want to call it)...
From there I got into playing the guitar & was looking for some good players and for the most part, I found them in the jazz world (Wes Montgomery, Pat Martino, John McLaughlin, George Benson, Jim Hall, Joe Pass etc.).
The thing I never really knew too much about, and still do not is the guitar hero world, outside of jazz, that is...so, what I was hoping was that someone could recommend a Jeff Beck record. From what I've heard, this guy is an amazing player with straight up great tone. I tend to like vingtage recordings more than the modern stuff, but anything you could recommend as a stellar example of stellar playing would be vastly appreciated.

Beck's two best records IMO are Blow by Blow and Wired. Those are two of his first solo albums I believe, if not the first.

Beck has used Strats, Rat distortion pedals and 50 watt Marshalls for many years, although when I saw him in '67 he was using a late 50's Les Paul with a stripped to natural finish with double cream pafs, a Marshall Super Fuzz, a Vox Wah Wah (probably with the original Clyde McCoy circuit) and a couple of Marshall stacks.

That's the Les Paul that an unscrupulous repairman stole the pickups out of I believe, but I don't know for sure. It's the one he used on Truth though.

I believe he leaves the Rat on pretty much all the time and cleans up his tone by reducing his guitar's volume control. Similar to the way Satriani and Vai use the Boss DS-1.

I'll highly recommend "Truth" as not only full of great playing and tone but just a stellar blues/rock album.

I also would recommend "Blow By Blow," "Wired" and "Guitar Shop." He has such unique phrasing, you never know what he is going to do. I just love the runs he does on "She's A Woman." and the way he manipulates volume and tone not to mention what the guy does with his fingers.

100% agreement! That's one of my favorite albums of all time. It's a real classic and it's the first thing I ever heard with Rod Stewart on it. Great playing and great singing. Wonder whatever happened to the drummer, Mick Waller?

We all know what became of the bass player: he joined the Small Faces and now plays guitar with the Rolling Stones!

Honestly, most of his studio albums sound kinda tame to me. The best thing to do is go on the internet and search for live bootlegs...CD's, Cassettes, and VHS.

Half the fun of listening to Beck is watching him play the guitar, so I think I may never buy another guitar virtuoso CD.......I'm just going to buy VHS and DVD's, so I can learn more by watching how they attack the guitar. It's kinda the feeling I had at User Group Day when I was was watching George Lynch sitting on a chair playing. I always knew he had chops, but watching him from 4 feet away.......I was like "damn, that mofo can rip!!!"

I've never watched GL play, but I've watched Jeff Beck play from pretty close up. Most guitarists, whether they're Joe Pass or Eric Johnson or Joe Satriani, I can basically suss out what they're doing, even if I can't do it myself. But Jeff Beck!?! It's a mystery half the time! You're watching his hands and all of these amazing sounds are soaring out of the speakers and he's got these big gnarly fingers that seem to be barely moving. Beck's been my favorite guitarist of them all for about 40 years...ever since the Yardbird days. To me, Beck and Hendrix are the two baddest cats and always have been. They are both just so genuinely original and self referencial and boundary free...they both work with sounds, not just notes and finger patterns. Both amazingly inventive and creative players on a par with Louis Armstrong or John Coltraine, IMO, even if they couldn't write down the notes for what they're doing.

I love "Trouble Man", but "Seasons" is definitely my favorite on that CD. The mood changes are unreal.
